Memorable characters and an interesting set up… one of my top dystopian books.’ @whatyoutolkienabout TEA/AECOM 2020 Theme Index and Museum Index" (PDF). Themed Entertainment Association. 2021 . Retrieved November 11, 2021. Although I have at times thrown myself into political causes, I have, like most people, spent most of my life pursuing my own selfish interests and pleasures. Isn’t it amazing, then, that this wee boy can come into the world, and, immediately, I would forsake my life for him without a second’s hesitation? I have never been unusually brave or selfless, and yet I would gladly take on any suffering if it would spare my son. That this is a normal experience makes it, to my mind, even more amazing. Is such selfless love not spiritual? Of course, you could say that for survival purposes we’ve evolved to have, I don’t know, cognitive and hormonal responses to reproduction, and I’m sure that’s true; but, again, how else would our material bodies process a thing such as love?

The " Happiest Homecoming on Earth" celebrated the 50th anniversary of the theme park. Sleeping Beauty Castle was altered for the occasion. On August 6, 1970, an estimated 300+ anti-war Yippies entered Disneyland in a planned protest against the Vietnam War. The protestors held grievances with specific aspects of the theme park itself, such as the Aunt Jemima-themed pancake restaurant in Frontierland and the park's association with Bank of America, a subject of controversy at the time for its lending to military contractors such as Boeing. [33] The Yippies were met by an estimated 100 riot police who established lookouts within the park and another 300 on standby just outside of the entrance gates. Around 4:00p.m., many of the Yippies occupied Tom Sawyer Island, purportedly smoking cannabis and causing cast members to halt park guests from boarding rafts to the island. An hour later, the group of Yippies converged at Main Street, U.S.A. and became confrontational with other park guests and riot police after tearing down patriotic bunting while unfurling Viet Cong and Youth International Party flags. Standby riot police entered and the park was evacuated around 5:00p.m. when some of the insurgents approached the park's Bank of America branch, sparking concern that the building could be burned in a similar fashion to the arson of a Bank of America in Isla Vista in February 1970. Police arrested 23 park guests and it was only the second unexpected early closure in park history, the first being in response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. The incident was cited as a clash of the park management's perceived appeal to tradition following the death of Walt Disney and the growing counterculture movement among young people in the United States. So it wasn’t an overtly political choice. Nevertheless, I recognise the political implications of a literary tradition that at least since Scott has normalised writing dialogue in Scots and narration in English. I’ve long been an admirer of James Kelman – for his fiction, his essays, and his sustained political commitment. Like Kelman I’m suspicious of nationalism in all its forms, but, like Kelman, I can see how using your own language can be an anti-imperialist act. In that regard Scotland has two challenges: there are all the issues arising from the historical and contemporary centralisation of power in London; but, increasingly, the imperial power that dominates us – militarily, economically, ideologically, and culturally – is the United States. Over the last decade, the rate at which US military and economic dominance has converted into ideological and cultural dominance has rapidly increased, aided by the internet. We’re edging towards a global monoculture, with cultural diversity being destroyed – in a process that in many ways parallels the destruction of biodiversity. The design of Main Street, U.S.A. uses the technique of forced perspective to create an illusion of height. [64] Buildings along Main Street are built at 3⁄ 4 scale on the first level, then 5⁄ 8 on the second story, and 1⁄ 2 scale on the third—reducing the scale by 1⁄ 8 each level up. In the central Scottish town of Dundule, residents of the Busy Bee Flats – Donna and her eight-year old daughter, dour ex-miner Douglas, big Giorgio the chip shop fryer, young druggies Tam and Mac – struggle like everyone else. Refreshingly original… thought provoking… surprisingly uplifting. I laughed, I cried… and I enjoyed the ride.’ @librarylove2781 But I’ll also add this – perhaps the point I’ll close on. For many years, I believed we could change the world through appealing to people’s rational self-interest: you should join the union because it will help you get a pay rise; you should lessen your carbon footprint so your kids inherit a tolerably inhabitable planet, etc. And that’s not true. Each individual’s material interests are better served by keeping their head down and letting some other poor mugs go on strike; it doesn’t much matter to you or me whether we recycle our rubbish, so long as most people do. I mean, for thousands of years, apocalyptic visions gave oppressed people hope: The Book of Revelation promises the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. I got interested in medieval millenarian Christian radicals – Thomas Müntzer, Melchoir Hoffman, Jan Matthys, etc. – and the movements they inspired. I kind of like their belief that some apocalyptic purge will rid the world of evil and bring about the New Jerusalem. Freeman, Paul. "Disneyland Heliport, Anaheim, CA".
