About this deal

Metalious found an agent, Jacques Chambrun, who submitted the draft manuscript to three major publishers. In the summer of 1955, Leona Nevler, a freelance manuscript reader, read it for Lippincott and liked it, but knew it was too steamy for a major publisher to accept. She showed it to Kathryn G. ("Kitty") Messner, president and editor-in-chief of the small firm Julian Messner. Messner immediately acquired the novel and asked Nevler to step in as a freelance editor for final polishing before publication. [4] Publishing phenomenon [ edit ] How did we forget what was once the bestselling novel of all time? There was a TV show, a movie, and anyone under 40 might be hearing about it for the first time here.

Since this is not nearly as scandalous as its reputation implies, the question becomes: is there a reason to read Peyton Place? Both women were compelling and I would have given this book 5 stars if it had been longer and gone into more depth about Grace and Barbara instead of the rushed endings.Mr Card was on his knees on the ground, his face hidden in Mrs Card’s flesh, and Mrs Card was lying very still, with her legs spread a little, and a smile on her face that showed her teeth. Serious studies of Peyton Place are being published. The novel is taking its place as one in a pantheon of other novels about small-town life, such as Sinclair Lewis’s Main Street and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio. Peyton Place became shorthand for secret scandals, mostly involving sex. Its author, Grace Metalious, was a New Hampshire schoolteacher’s wife whose own scandals were anything but secret. She was a mother of three and, by all accounts, a lousy housewife who drank, swore, wore baggy jeans and cheated on her husband.

I thought this book was excellent and I give the author cudos for writing this book when she did and to the publisher for publishing it. I was waffling at 4.5 stars and given this plus the author's writing I decided to rate it 5 on GR rather than down to 4 (since GR doesn't offer 1/2 stars). This book is a story within another story. The first story is about author Grace Metalious, her life, and her novel "Peyton Place". The second story is about Barbara Roberts and the sheep pen murder which was, at least to some degree, the inspiration for the murder in Metalious' novel. So this is a novel where you can encounter massively boned men. Y eso engancha, mucho.thanks to WildBlue Press for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Harmon threw his newspaper down on the floor and pounded the fist of one hand into the palm of the other. … “I’m not going to sweat blood at the mill to send him to college if this is the way he’s going to behave,” said Harmon.

Grace Metalious (September 8, 1924 – February 25, 1964) was an American author known for her novel Peyton Place, one of the best-selling works in publishing history. She insisted Peyton Place was based on several places in New Hampshire – including Durham, where her husband attended the University of New Hampshire; Gilmanton, where he taught school; and Laconia, where her favorite bar was located. Peyton Place, The Book There were a few grammatical errors throughout-but that seems endemic to the ebook format. Also, try not to read the footnotes in your first pass, some are spoilers - as much as a nearly 80 year old event can be spoiled.) Fox, Margalit, "Leona Nevler, Editor, Dies at 79; Shepherded Peyton Place". The New York Times, December 15, 2005.

Movie and television adaptations

women suffered similar abuse when everything is supposed to be so wonderful and happy for girls and women. It was also interesting to read how her punishment for the crime was carried out. The book’s massive success coincided with the end of Grace’s marriage and a tough time for her children who were taunted and shunned. Locals were outraged at what they perceived as having their dirty linen aired in public. This is the massively boned (see below) impossibly handsome new high school principal speaking, telling the mother of a 16 year old to take a chill pill. This was before the abovementioned auto accident.
