About this deal

Pros: We love that there are three operating modes to allow for a tailored treatment plan – Gentle, Speed and Power. In each of the three modes, you can use the Glide or Stamp method, adjusting to the surface area you’re working on. Simply shave your treatment area, leave it to dry, lay the device flat to your skin, and moisturiser after you've finished. Oh, and it comes with a two-year warranty. With the green box sitting flat and secure, gently and slowly slide up the white lid. Don’t do it the other way or you risk the laser device rolling out! The Tria laser sits in a white plastic moulded bed with a green ribbon to lift it. Underneath is the charging cable and a small square user guide booklet. The contents of the box: Tria 4X laser device, user instruction booklet, mains charger (UK plug supplied here) Unfortunately, there’s no way to know if you’ll feel pain. But be aware it’s possible and weigh this up in your decision. Legs & large areas?

Establish a treatment area and place the laser tip on the area of skin you wish to treat, making sure that it is flat on your skin. And unlike home IPL devices, you won’t see any bright flashes of light escaping from the Tria. That’s because the energy is infrared and not visible to us. This means you won’t need to look away with each pulse. So it’s easy to move the small precise head with accuracy. The Philips Lumea Prestige use intense pulsed light energy (IPL), and the Tria 4X uses strong laser energy to damage and disable your hair follicles, slowing and then stopping hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home laser & IPL works here. In this Prestige vs Tria 4X review:Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, FAAD, is a New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist and Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College. She notes that safety comes first when performing any at-home hair removal treatments and advises making yourself aware of any "risks and potential side effects [irritation, cuts, burns, or scarring] to these procedures, and to therefore exercise caution while performing them." To prolong the overall life of the battery, use and charge your Tria at a cool temperature. This stops the battery overheating Sounds great! Loads of people choose the Tria 4X over any IPL hair removal systems because it’s most powerful. They want the best possible results in the shortest time. However, it’s not the best choice for treating large body areas. You can learn more about this later. For small areas you get at least 50 complete treatments. That includes face, underarms, bikini line and forearms. This covers the start-up stage and roughly 3 more years of monthly top-ups. And with the best results possible, you’ll need much less frequent top-ups. Therefore, it’s going to last several years of use.

With most products like this, be sure to do a patch test 24 hours before using to see if you have any adverse reactions. Let's Get Started Both devices come in neat boxes that are professional, attractive and have all the important info clearly visible. They’re compact and secure with minimal plastic. The Tria stands out for the small details, such as the small ribbon tab inside the box. We also recommend the Tria Phytograph Hydrating Calm Soothing Gel, which features ingredients to keep skin cool and comfortable and help speed treatment with your Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X or Precision laser. Apply liberally prior to treatment and reapply following treatment to calm and soothe skin.

How we tested

The Tria 4X Laser keeps zapping until the lithium battery inside eventually degrades. The Prestige IPL bulb has a finite number of flashes before it runs out. The sensation of the Tria Laser 4X varies, depending on the person and treatment area. Start at a low treatment level (one or two) and then increase by one treatment level at a time until you've reached the highest treatment level comfortable to you. The higher the treatment level, the faster and better the results. Another form of permanent hair removal is electrolysis. "For those who are not good candidates for laser hair removal [such as people with light hair], I generally recommend electrolysis," explains Dr. Goldny. "This treatment involves sending electric currents down the follicles, hair by hair." Compared to laser hair removal, electrolysis is a much slower process, and per Dr. Goldny, it may take "10-20 treatments for significant results." Which hair removal process lasts the shortest?

IPL-based devices like the Silk'n SensEpil do tend to require a few extra treatments. "Because it is less selective, it often takes more treatments for the same result and has the potential for more side effects," Dr. Lal says. To protect you, both devices have a skin sensor around the flash window and laser aperture. They won’t flash unless they detect your skin covering the entire window. This means it’s not going to accidentally flash into anyone’s eyes. Choosing a hair-removal device may require some experimentation, as everyone’s skin and hair reacts differently to each method. For example, while you may prefer to shave, it could leave your skin feeling dry and irritated. Similarly, you might think you want to wax but find the procedure too painful. The best way to know how your skin and hair will react is to try out the device on a small patch of skin on your forearm. If your trial goes well, you can expand to other areas of your body. Take laser hair removal, for example. According to New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist Bradley Glodny MD, those with fair skin and dark hair are "the absolute best candidate for laser hair removal," which offers long-lasting results. On the other hand, "If you have white hair that is unwanted, laser hair removal will likely not be the best device for you," he explains. There’s a helpful treatment guide in the user guide booklet. Based on this information, and our tests, you can treat your face and a couple of small areas with one charge e.g. your upper lip, chin, jawline and a pair of underarms, or both sides of the bikini line. Zaps and minutes per body area table in the user bookletAs with all other IPL based treatments, this light energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle. When there is not enough melanin present in the hair, for example in light blonde, white or grey hair, then IPL will not work. Equally, red hair has a different type of melanin present, which cannot absorb the light so again is not suitable for IPL treatment. IPL treatments are also not recommended for those with the darkest of dark skin tones."
