We are showing a group of nine in Here We Are McCullin’s career spans over six decades. He specializes in examining the underbelly of society. McCullin presents photographs that depict the unemployed, downtrodden, and impoverished. But he also creates beautiful still lifes, soulful portraits, and moving landscapes. 10. Edward Weston Why do we do it? I think we all ask ourselves this question, especially as the industry becomes ever more volatile, with colleagues losing their jobs, and even their lives, more often than many of us ever expected when we went into this profession. Not to mention the steeply declining pay for those of us who manage to eke out a living doing editorial work… But for me, it comes down to the people in my photographs.

Known For: Considered one of the best portrait photographers in the United States, known for her use of bold colors and dramatic poses Claudia) was tall and beautiful, and I see many girls like that, but when I went home and looked at the pictures, I saw this incredible resemblance to Brigitte Bardot which got me very excited. Vivian Maier moved to Chicago in fifty-six, around her thirtieth birthday, locating in Highland Park on the North Shore, connected to the city by commuter rail. She worked as a nanny, including a year with Phil Donahue and his kids. Bannos also reveals that while many of Maier's photographs give the impression of Maier as a solitary rover of the streets who had a hard time interacting with people, this was not actually the case. As her 1951 series involving "three dark-haired Italian sisters" named Serafina, Beatrice and Anna Randazzo indicates, she at least occasionally conducted planned portrait sessions. When Empress Farah was looking at his work for the first time, there was a power cut in the building.

Mayor of Todmorden’s inaugural banquet – Martin Parr, 1977This photograph is from Martin Parr’s series of photographs called The Non-Conformists, which he took in the West Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding area, in the years after he moved there from Manchester in 1975. Much of Parr’s work during this period focused on documenting the non-conformist Methodist and Baptist churches in the area and the communities within them For many years he has stood his ground, and he even makes the magazines sign a contract where they agree not to do any retouching. I have been there, as a young photographer, and I understand that passion and drive — and now, as my career has taken me through so many levels and roles in our industry, I feel compelled to support and nurture those storytellers, to help them continue to produce important work and tell those stories, often uncomfortable ones, so that we can, sitting in the comfort of our homes, be made aware of the darker side of our world. Photographers are the dedicated, passionate and sometimes half-crazy individuals who are willing to give their lives, too often quite literally, to show us what needs to be seen, what needs to be known. I can think of no greater honor nor privilege than to have lived a life surrounded by images and the amazing individuals who create them and share them with us. Robert Capa was a Hungarian photojournalist and war photographer who risked his life numerous times so that he could capture soldiers in action.

His life partner, Gerda Taro, had the same occupation. Although she died very young, her career had an immense impact on photojournalism. In one of his interviews, Richard Avedon shared that his personal hero was the French artist Henri Matisse. This art, this madness, this compulsion to convey a story we know as photojournalism will not die, storytelling will not die, it will change and evolve but it is human nature to want to learn, to be educated and to understand our world through narratives.
