It’s always a pleasure to listen to smart people talk. It’s an even greater pleasure to read them. Atmospheres is such a book by Peter Zumthor, containing the architect’s lecture on architecture and its intricate relationship with atmosphere. The book, despite being brief, is brimming with passion and ideas that will make you rethink architecture and space. Atmospheres is a poetics of architecture and a window into Zumthor s personal sources of inspiration. In nine short, illustrated chapters framed as a process of self-observation, Zumthor describes what he has on his mind as he sets about creating the atmosphere of his buildings: images of spaces and buildings that affect him are every bit as important as particular pieces of music or books that inspire him. Vitruvius noted that since the human body is the measure of architecture, it is also that which determines atmospheric qualities. It is the human body that emanates the structural qualities of architecture. Drawing from Vitruvius’ discussion of architecture, a number of twentieth-century architects have adopted a phenomenological interpretation of their work, to understand architecture’s primary concern as the body in space. Among these architects include; Peter Zumthor, Steven Holl and Juhani Pallasmaa. Their architectural works draw from the philosophical tradition of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Martin Heidegger, the correlation of the body and its sensory-motor functions. Merleau-Ponty in Phenomenology of Perception [6] asserts that, “the body and mind cannot be separated as subject and object”. The Spinozistic perception of the mode of body influences what is perceived by the mind. [7] NIVO INTIMNOSTI – opet varijacija na temu – masa zgrade spram sopstvene, lične. A i jasno je, neki prostori su intimniji, prisniji, neki su distancirani. To je isto delokrug atmosfere. Atmospheres, written in an active voice almost seem like a dialogue in self-reflection and analysis, meandering through questions, answers, examples, thoughts and anecdotes. A free verse in elucidating Zumthor’s affinity for architecture, its presence and beauty. He uses Brahms’ music and Nietzsche’s philosophy to communicate the power of art, music and architecture as well as the intensity, mood, thoughts and magic they produce. Atmospheres by Peter Zumthor

Zumthor has taught at University of Southern California Institute of Architecture and SCI-ARC in Los Angeles (1988), the Technical University of Munich (1989), Tulane University (1992), and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (1999). Since 1996, he has been a professor at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio. [3] He compares the role of an Architect to that of a Set Designer or the Director of a play. I find these thoughts a-kin to my work within theatre, that a space/building/structure needs the user to explore it and find their own way around it. It is not without real people experiencing it as to whether you know you’ve made something successfully. Theatre needs an audience to experience it, for the creatives to know they’ve succeeded in the piece they wanted to make. For Architects and Designers this is like buildings needing people to inhabit them, for their usability to be of ease and pleasurable for them in turn to be seen as a success. Atmospheres is a poetics of architecture and a window into Zumthor's personal sources of inspiration. In nine short, illustrated chapters framed as a process of self-observation, Zumthor describes what he has on his mind as he sets about creating the atmosphere of his houses: images of spaces and buildings that affect him are every bit as important as particular pieces of music or books that inspire him. He explains the intricacies and tectonics of the slow movement in architecture, deliberately designing signals that guide one to a voyage. An exploration of space through sensorial qualities like sound, air, temperature and light, he makes the users associate with memory, familiarity and wonder as they navigate in between the tangible and the intangible.Steilneset minnested (engl.: Steilneset Memorial) Archived 15 September 2012 at archive.today – Information about the memorial from the commune of Vardø. (in Norwegian and English)) There were and are so many passages within this book which reminded me of experiences I’ve had before, things I’ve considered when designing within my own practice. For example, the surrounding objects within a space defining the person who inhabits it. A living space is a deeply personal thing and we hold value to the things we keep around us. Zumthor’s speaks of an experience he has visiting a friends house in Cologne and comments “I’m impressed by the things people keep around them” pg 35. An important part of an Interior Designers job is to help a client curate this for themselves, so their interior represents them.
