So I remember just sitting there with wet hair, in between two changing rooms. It was like the perfect metaphor… the chlorine drying on my skin and waiting for my dad to come out of the men’s changing room.” Horne, Alex. "20 Questions with MAE MARTIN Series 15 Taskmaster". Taskmaster. YouTube. Event occurs at 1:00–1:20 . Retrieved 27 April 2023. In one standup monologue, Martin says that their mother drew diagrams for her young child to illustrate everything from the missionary position to anal sex. On stage, Martin says that on the first day of school, aged four, they told any pupil who would listen how to perform anal sex while delivering the savage blow that Father Christmas didn’t exist. Martin admits there was comedic licence there – it wasn’t quite the first day, but the essence of it was true. “I was delivering a lot of hard truths to the kids. I was just like: I can’t believe we’re all living in this charade.”

Martin’s tattoos serve as a shorthand for their remarkable life story. They consist of odd words and numbers – 416 is the Toronto phone code; “Oatmeal” was to impress an older woman Martin was besotted with at 16; “Basement” is to remind them never again to live in one; 28/05/07 is a reminder of the date Martin came across a close childhood friend by chance in Nepal, whom they had lost touch with. Mae Martin’s Devastating Queer Comedy ‘Feel Good’ Review: Mae Martin’s Devastating Queer Comedy

MM: Yeah, being comfortable with ambiguity is important to me and sort of rejecting the pressure that you have to come down hard on one side or another and have a definitive point of view about everything. MM: Oh interesting! Interesting. I’m trying to think who would be who. Mae to me would be Paul, because Paul’s the romantic. But then John’s got the edge… no, I can’t. I feel too invested in that analogy to think about it. Mae’s silliness pierces through even the most intense moments, breaking the tension with often poetic poignance. After receiving a diagnosis of PTSD, Mae asks the doctor: “Do you think you could just test if I’m full of birds or something?”a b c d Dessau, Bruce (8 August 2017). "Mae Martin: 'I like to do shows that open a dialogue' ". www.standard.co.uk . Retrieved 17 April 2021. Martin’s comedy is self-deprecating and gently philosophical, a far cry from the long-reigning standard of ranty monologues spewed by disaffected dudes. Martin allows earnestness in, as opposed to, as they put it, performing in sunglasses. In the noughties, one of Martin’s heroes, Sarah Silverman, adopted an ironic persona – a squeamish, ignorant proto-Karen – as a way to smuggle in a social critique, but still fit in with the bilious stand-up culture of the moment. Martin admires how Silverman has more recently stated that comedy is not evergreen: “As society evolves and changes there’s things you just wouldn’t say now, and you just have to keep listening and evolving. It’s not that hard to not be offensive.” Salam, Maya (24 May 2021). "Mae Martin Embraces Ambiguity in 'Feel Good,' and in Life". The New York Times . Retrieved 5 July 2021.

Comedy has defined most of Martin’s life. It was a means of escape as a child, a catalyst for chaos as a teenager, and has ultimately provided a path to redemption. After 14 years clean, how has Martin changed? “I’m less manic, more aware of my addictive behaviour. That enables me to write about it with a bit of perspective.” Does that addictive behaviour express itself in safer ways now? Martin smiles, more with relief than anything else. “Yes, I think I’m a workaholic these days.” She has also written a book called Can everyone Please calm down? A guide to 21st century sexuality.

Customer reviews

You'd think, between being in the BBC's very popular and very, very good haunted house sitcom Ghosts as well as the last series of Taskmaster, she'd aim a bit higher. But no: it's Centre Parcs or bust.
