About this deal

Cordylines grow well from seed. The seeds should be sown in spring once the weather has warmed up. For best results start them in a propagator and then move them to a bright, sheltered spot once the weather is warm. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them up individually. On most Cordylines the top 3 cm or so would have been damaged but this varies on how old and tall the woody stem is. Once you have cut off the top of the Cordyline paint the cut with Arbrex which is available in most garden centres with a decent garden shop. Cordylines are best planted in spring, after the last frost. This gives them time to get established before winter, increasing their chances of survival. Cordyline australis is one of the species you’ll most often see in cultivation. It resembles yucca and has long, dark, narrow leaves. There are several cultivars of this species, including ‘Dark Star’ with reddish leaves, ‘Jive’ that grows like a small tree, and ‘Pink Champagne’ with leaves of green, cream, and pink variegation. Remove the lower leaves, dip the stem in hormone rooting compost and insert into pots of potting compost mixed with horticultural grit. Mist well with water. Cover the pot with a large plastic bag to help retain moisture. Place the pots in a sheltered warm spot.

Tender species, such as Cordyline marginata, C. strictaand C. fruticosa(syn. C. terminalis), are best grown in containers, so they can easily be moved indoors over winter. Imogen could not have been more helpful and her garden knowledge was first class. Cannot recommend highly enough especially for large plants.

Cordylines naturally and gradually lose their older leaves, which can be removed to improve the plant’s appearance. These can be left until the late Spring / early Summer months and new stems should start appearing from the inside of the plant. A good feed with all purpose granular or liquid feed between May and September should assist – see below.

Taketerminal (shoot tip) cuttings that are 10–15cm (4–6in) long. Remove all the leaves apart from the terminal tuft. With their bold, architectural appearance, cordylines make striking focal points. As well as green-leaved cultivars, there are some with dark red or purple foliage, or with yellow, pink or white stripes. Cordylines require little pruning, simply remove dead leaves and spent flowers. You can also remove any stems or leaves that have suffered winter damage. It is best to wait until the harshest weather is over before doing this. Move themto a frost-free location, such as a greenhouse, porch or conservatory. You can also give them temporary shelter in a shed or garage during cold snaps.Step 1: Take your cutting from a mature plant, selecting a stem that has had at least a year to mature.

For plastic-free insulation, use straw and hessian, or a glass cloche, instead of bubblewrap and fleece. Cordyline is a genus of plants native to Pacific islands and parts of Southeast Asia. There are around 15 species of this evergreen and woody perennial. While in the U.S. it will only be hardy through zone 9 outdoors, cordyline plant varieties are easy to grow as houseplants. They just need warmth, bright, and indirect sunlight, rich soil, and regular watering. Is Cordyline a Dracaena? This cultivar variety has green leaves that are striped with red at the centre. It reaches a mature height of around 4 metres (13 feet). Less Hardy VarietiesIf planting in a container, use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No 3. It is wise to add some horticultural grit to improve drainage as these plants do not like to sit in wet soil. Cordylines are widely available all year round in garden centres, tropical nurseries and online suppliers, including RHS Plants. Cordyline should not be allowed to completely dry out, especially in the growing season. Water them deeply rather than little and often. These plants can be damaged by fluoride, so if you live in an area where the tap water is high in fluoride you should water them with rainwater. Indoor plants can be watered with distilled water if necessary. Container grown plants will need regular watering in summer, but far less in winter when they are not growing. Avoid having your plant sit in cold, wet soil. Soil Requirements
