The downside of coaxial rotors in real helicopters is that the gearbox necessary for coaxial motion can get to be pretty heavy. You don’t have that problem in light-weight toys like this one where you can get away with using a completely plastic gearbox. Place your shredded cotton balls in your snow globe. You want to fill it to the top and you may want to add more after adding water so ensure you have plenty on hand. The vehicle electronics are pretty simple. A single eight-pin chip handles all the sensing and motor control and LED flashing. There are no markings on the chip so it’s probably a device made specifically for toys like this. The other semiconductors on the circuit board consist of a lithium battery USB charger IC from the Linear Technology operation of Analog Devices, an N-channel MOSFET from Siliconix, and an infrared receiver IC from Open Impulse in Hong Kong that detects reflections off surfaces from an infrared LED that’s aimed downward. The infrared LED and the infrared receiver together form a proximity sensor that signals the motor driver to boost the lift because the toy is too close to the ground. Of course, you can take it slower, really using that crafting time to connect and put lots of care and detail into this craft. It’s whatever works for you. (I provide some ideas below on how you can make this craft even more detailed and personalized.)

Our DIY Crystal Balls have lasted for months – I thought the water might evaporate or change color by now but they are still just as gorgeous as ever. We glued the lid shut on ours to prevent curious hands from opening it, but you could leave it unglued and swap out the fillings/theme whenever the mood strikes. ( Update: we’ve now had our crystal balls on display for 2 years and they are still going strong! Distilled, filtered or bottled water is definitely the way to go!) On view alongside an exhibition of Cornell’s witchcraft collection, the famous film prop has been equipped with technology to recreate the movie’s effect of conjuring images on within its surface. You can even swap out the colors for a unicorn crystal ball or mermaid crystal ball – and use themed glitter, too. You can use glass paints to paint a scene on the crystal ball. Or even use a wood burner to etch a name or favorite quote on the wooden base. The possibilities are endless.
While I love crafting with my daughter and connecting with her creative side, it can be so hard to fit in the time to craft during a busy school day.

The crystal ball is being shown in association with “ The World Bewitch’d: Visions of Witchcraft from the Cornell Collections,” which documents the spread of the belief in witchcraft across Europe, including the long history of persecution of accused witches. “The World Bewitch’d” was curated by University Librarian Emerita Anne R. The typical application circuit for the infrared receiver IC includes a crystal, and the datasheet also says the chip uses a 38-kHz carrier frequency on its input. Interestingly enough, we didn’t find a crystal on the toy’s circuit board. So you might surmise that the main IC is generating the carrier for the IR LED, but without the benefit of a crystal. Consequently, the carrier frequency is probably drifting a bit, but that doesn’t seem to be important for floating a toy off the ground. In the quest Following a Lead you will find the Traitor's Diary, which reveals what happened to the ship's crew.Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done. Technicians also outfitted the ball to display scenes from the movie, using a thin, inflatable screen melded to the ball’s shape by an air pump, as well as a light projection system.

Fill the snow globe to full - you may want to do this over a tray, container or the sink so that excess water can come out when you add the lid.
