About this deal

If your washing machine spends more of its life being repaired than it does washing clothes, it might be time to buy a new one.

If you want to show it some TLC, then it is a great idea to protect it from the build-up of limescale & detergent that can happen over time in your machine. As well as being one of the easiest DIY appliance fixes out there, fixing your washing machine element yourself can save you a lot of money compared to booking a repair or buying a new washing machine. If you have a fault with your machine, you might be wondering whether you should call the manufacturer and get a repair for free as opposed to calling in a sole trader. The first thing to think about is whether the machine is still covered by a guarantee or warranty. The element plays an important role in keeping your appliance running, as it ensures the water is hot during the wash (if the water is not heated the machine may wash continuously and not finish a cycle). The good news is that you can easily replace it yourself or hire a tradesperson to do it for you – just make sure you buy a timer that is compatible with your washer make and model.

Step 18. Fit the door gasket around the front panel. Use your needle-nosed pliers to fit the metal band around the gasket. If the bolts have been removed and it's still not working it might be an issue with the installation. Door damage – If the door, handle or latch has any damage this could cause the machine to cease opening. Inspect your door before calling out the repair man. Step 13. Reconnect the electrical connectors to their appropriate terminals on the heating element. You might want to take a look at our guides on how to fix common washing machine problems and tumble dryer maintenance tips in case you're able to rectify the issue yourself. Unplug the electrical connectors attached to the heating element at the bottom of the tub (ensure that you take note of where each connector goes).
