Calico is a puzzly tile-laying game of quilts and cats. In Calico, players compete to sew the coziest quilt as they collect and place patches of different colors and patterns. Each quilt has a special pattern that must be adhered to, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats.
Players compete to create the best quilt by playing a quilt tile on each turn on their personal player board. [3] Then players draw a new tile from one of three available in a public market. If a player has placed three connected tiles of the same color, they may place a button of that color on their board which will score them points at the end of the game. [4] Placing tiles with matching patterns attracts cats which are also worth points, which can also be scored by placing the right number of colored or patterned tiles around preset goal tiles. However, don’t be fooled by the game’s apparent simplicity! Beneath the surface, it’s quite complex – there’s certainly more than meets the eye, which is why it’s often described as under-promising and over-delivering. Cat scoring tiles are double-sided and give Calico some additional setup variety. One side allows players to earn a cat token for groups of matching pattern tiles, while the other side requires those tiles to be in specific arrangements. Setting up a basic Beat Your Own Score (BYOS) solo game is simple. You take a board and select 3 out of the 6 colour coordinated design goal tiles at random which go on the marked spaces. You then choose 3 cat cards at random placing 2 monochromatic pattern tiles under each, and put the button and cat tokens within easy reach. Finally, grab the bag of colourful quilt tiles, give yourself two as a starting hand, and then place 3 quilt tiles on the table to form your draw pool (“market”). The bag then goes to the left of the market. That’s it! You are ready to rumble in the quilted jungle! Whether you utilize the correct size or shape, this must be done using one of their two preferred patterns.
A design goal can be completed twice – once with patterns, once with colors – but you will receive only the higher point value on the tile. In this version of the game, you focus on attracting cats simply by collecting buttons. Who is Calico for? Through two rounds (twilight and moonlight) players compete to collect the strongest sets of magical items like firebird feathers, creature skulls, glowing mushrooms, mysterious eggs, and rare herbs. These items have value when collected in specific sets, but can also be combined to fulfill recipes needed for concoctions, scoring you even more prestige! The premise alone has the potential to put people off – a board game about quilting and cats, really? – but give it a chance, and Calico might surprise you. It’s surprisingly addictive, especially since there’s the chance to continue to earn new ranks the more games you play.Quilts & Cats of Calico is a cozy board game in which the player's main task is to make a quilt from patterned fabric scraps. By smartly combining the colors and patterns of the scraps, the player can not only score points for the completed design but also sew on buttons and attract adorable cats, who have their own preferences for bedding patterns. Speaking of the player boards, this is where the action unfolds as you construct your patchwork duvet for the cats to moult on! Before the game starts you will choose or randomly draw three scoring tiles. These will reward you for specific combinations of tiles adjacent to them at the end of the game.
Calico is a particularly great game if you’re looking for a way to while away the hours with pleasant company and a cup of hot cocoa. It isn’t particularly competitive, focusing instead on creativity and fun. To score the higher yellow Design Goal points shown on the tile, you have to achieve it for both colour and pattern. For example AA-BB-CC means that you have to encircle that goal tile with 6 tiles comprising 3 pairs of the same colours and patterns. They don’t have to be identical pairs, but the 6 tiles must comply with the goal. E.g. you could have 1 yellow fern + 1 blue fern + 1 blue spot + 1 green spot + 1 green stripe + I yellow stripe as that would equal 2 x yellow, 2 x green, 2 x blue, 2 x stripe, 2 x fern, 2 x spots! 11 points thank you kindly! To set up Calico, give each person a player board and the matching colored goal tiles. There are 6 different goal tiles which give Calico some in-game scoring variety. The rules suggest that for your first game players each use the AAA-BBB, AA-BB-CC, and ≠ goal tiles, placing them in the same location on each board. And if you put at least 3 patches in a row of the same color, you get buttons. Some of the buttons are in the shapes of mushrooms, blueberries, flowers, or leaves.” After all of the tokens have been removed and tallied, the player with the highest point total wins the game. Final Thoughts on CalicoI’d recommend Catan as an alternative to Calico for anyone who wants a family board game but isn’t a massive fan of cats (or quilts!). In this addictive game, trade, build, and settle on the island of Catan as you control your own civilization and spread across the board.
A game for 1 – 4 players, Calico is very simple to set up. In a normal multiplayer game, each player receives a unique colour coded player board (quilt) and a corresponding set of six goal tiles, four of which are chosen at random. Out of those four, three are then placed on the marked spaces and form a player’s personal objectives for the game. Now, there is a specific “Beginner Set up” in the rulebook but the only real difference there is that it specifies which Cats and Design Goal tiles to use (and where to place them). Sometimes minding their own business, and other times coming to you and your quilt. They will lazily observe the board, romp and run around, and sometimes fall into a blissful nap. They are cats, you never know. You can interact with them during the game, pet them, and shoo them away when they get in the way. I’ve been trying to work out what it is about these simple-ruleset/formidable gameplay games that I like so much, and the main thing I can come up with is that no matter how well or badly I do, it will never be because of a rules mistake. I might have to try and hold a lot of different bits of information in my head, but I’ll never misinterpret some card and end up with fewer resources than what I was counting on. Whether I do well in a game of Calico or badly, it feels like that will always be because of the choices I made with the tiles that were available.Similarly, if patch placement has secured a pattern sequence printed on any of the cat cards, a little cat token can cosy up onto one of the relevant tiles on that player’s quilt and will score the relevant number of victory points shown on the corresponding card (and underneath the token itself). Play it just right and it is even possible to pull off killer-combo moves gaining cats, buttons, and goals in a single turn; enough point booty to make even the greatest Street Fighter fan weep into their bandaged hands! If the game ends in a tie, the player with the most button tokens takes the victory. The winner earns the “Master Quilter” badge. Variations Cascadia is a puzzly tile-laying game featuring the habitats and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest! In Cascadia, players take turns building their terrain and populating it with wildlife. Players must create a diverse and harmonious ecosystem - each animal species has a different spatial preference and each habitat must be placed to reduce fragmentation and create wildlife corridors.
