The report said: “This outbreak is rapidly evolving, and children have so far been most at risk for severe infection among reported cases.

A Ferrero spokesperson said: “Ferrero is co-operating with the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland on a possible link to a number of reported cases of salmonella. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the latest update means all the products in the recall notice, no matter what the best-before date is, should not be eaten. The products affected by the recall are Kinder Surprise, Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Surprise Egg 100g and Kinder Schoko-Bons. Some Kinder Surprise batches have been recalled across Europe after being linked to illness in young people. The UK’s Food Standards Agency said: “Ferrero is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in retail stores that are selling these products. The food business involved has voluntarily carried out this product withdrawal and recall and we are working closely with them and their competent authorities to identify the precise cause of this outbreak.”Tina Potter, the FSA’s head of incidents, had said previously: “We welcome the precautionary approach being taken by Ferrero and are advising consumers not to eat any of the products listed in the FSA alert. It is really important that consumers follow this advice to avoid the risk of becoming ill with salmonella poisoning. It added that he factory “distributed the implicated chocolate products across Europe and globally after negative Salmonella testing”. Ferrero also said it was suspending operations at its plant in Arlon, which it said will only reopen “once certified by the authorities”. The report said “the processing step involving buttermilk was identified as the possible contamination point”, and hygiene measures were implemented. Consumers should follow the advice in the latest recall notice, which details all of the products which may pose a risk,” she said.

The recall was related to the same products – Kinder Surprise, Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Surprise 100g and Kinder Schokobons – announced earlier in the week. Fine MILK chocolate 40% (sugar, MILK powder, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, emulsifier: lecithins ( SOYA), vanillin), sugar, skimmed MILK powder, palm oil, concentrated BUTTER, emulsifier: lecithins ( SOYA), vanillin.Salmonella can be spread from person to person, so anyone affected should adhere to good hygiene practice such as washing hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and avoiding handling food for others where possible, if you have symptoms.” Dr Lesley Larkin of the UKHSA said: “We welcome the co-operation of Ferrero in instituting the recall and withdrawal of a number of confectionery products linked to an ongoing outbreak of salmonella in the UK.
