WhiskyCritic recently had the opportunity to try a few drops of J.A. Baczewski Monopolowa Whisky 1782 – a whisky blend from Vienna, Austria. J. A. Baczewski's journey, from its inception in Lwów to its global acclaim, encapsulates the brand's resilience, innovation, and commitment to excellence. The World War II era was tumultuous. With the onset of the Polish Defensive War in 1939, the Luftwaffe bombed the factory. Subsequently, post the Soviet Union's occupation of the city, the remnants of this iconic distillery were razed, and replaced by an emery paper factory. Yet, the legacy of Baczewski persisted. Writers, poets, and the general populace revered the brand, with its spirits remaining coveted commodities even three decades post-war.Finish: Short in length. The honey and lemon notes last a short amount of time, along with the cinnamon. A hint of the malt, like digestive biscuits fades immediately. J.A. Baczewski Monopolowa began life as a Poland-based company – hence, the name translating to “monopoly” in Polish – but long ago was taken over by Austrian interests and, in fact, promotes itself as the “the purveyor to the Imperial Austrian and Royal Hungarian Court since 1810” on the label and is mostly known for their other products, primarily their vodka. The Ambra Group, together with the JA Baczewski brand, restores the tradition of pre-war whiskey. The group introduced JA Baczewski whiskey to the market, announcing that it sees great potential in it.

Under Eduard's guidance, J. A. Baczewski Vodka "Monopolowa" was reintroduced. This potato vodka stood out due to its depth of flavour and unique character. Following Eduard's passing in 1979, the companies' consolidation occurred under the leadership of his son, Elek Gessler. By 1983, "Altvater Gessler - J. A. Baczewski International (USA) Inc." was established to oversee operations in the United States. Today, both companies remain under the Gessler family's ownership.Nose: Plenty of summer honey, zesty citrus, heaps of fermenting orchard fruits and all dusted with a generous helping of icing sugar. It’s quite perfumed too, a mixture of flowers and fruit plant leaves. After a while a more mellow note if chocolate caramel appears. I’m very pleasantly surprised by the nose, lots going on, pretty nicely balanced and some very pleasant smelling elements. Whiskybase B.V. A good spice hit on the chest upon the first sip, but that’s where it ends. The honey remains, as does the fruit and sugar. There’s more malt on the palate, along with cinnamon, ginger bread and lemon curd. There’s a buyer note towards the finish that I’m not a fan of, similar to bitter coffee, that’s a little cloying.
