I have heard this type of sound periodically over the past few years when riding a public bus and when flying in a commercial jet. The sound originates from inside the bus or jet above everyone's head. It is loud and easily discernable from common noises. No one has ever spoken up to question what caused that noise, as if they already know a demon caused it. Christians also turned to ancient traditions of magic and magical objects, such as amulets, to help ward off spiritual dangers. According to some writers, succubi and incubi are visible only to witches, and invisible to common people. Like many Pentecostals in the Global South, the Mountain of Fire Ministries believe spiritual forces can be the cause of many different afflictions, including divorce and poverty. If you don’t believe in the supernatural, spiritual realms, and the entities that occupy them, then I don’t know what to tell you other than much of your life will not make sense. The truth is some people are hyper-preceptive to the spiritual forces all around us while most are super-oblivious to these things. Similar sexually demonic figures were the Germanic Lorelei or the Greek Sirens, that used their songs and attractiveness to guide sailors to disasters. This explanation was likely caused by the fact that some people chose to express their sexuality regardless of the consequences, and so the Church and clergy considered them to be incurably possesed by Succubi and Incubi.
Meanwhile the end of the 19th century also saw the emergence of the Pentecostal movement, the fastest growing segment of global Christianity. Pentecostalism featured a renewed interest in the work of the Holy Spirit and its manifestation in new signs and wonders, from miraculous healings to ecstatic speech. Further, witch-hunters claimed that girls who “fall” sexually (to a devil or not) are more easily led into total corruption. Succubi and Incubi could be legal loopholesAnd for Walter Stephens, one remarkable fact blew out immediately in front of all others: when he examined the transcripts of witchcraft trials from the fifteenth century onward, he noticed that the sex accusations generally originated with very learned, educated, literate interrogators. Famous theologians of the time debated if the dream lover had really been the husband (if yes, then the child would become a legal heir) or if the lover was an incubus in her husband’s semblance. Demons are in the muscles (or facial structures) responsible for opening and closing the mouth. They work to keep the mouth closed and force breathing through the nostrils. The person is sufficated when demons have stopped a person from breathing through the nose or mouth. In a similar fashion, the woodland god Pan, with his horns and cloven hooves, predates Satan and influenced early Christian imagination about the Lord of Evil. Sometimes the Bible implies one thing, and sometimes it implies something else entirely. Most Christians consider the definitive statement about angels to come from Matthew 22:30:
