After the successful release, the record company sought to replicate the commercial success by releasing a third single from the album, Average Man. However, UK radio channels didn't embrace the single as they had with previous releases and the chart performance (no. 35 [11]) was seen as disappointment by fans and the record label.

Pain Killer" (also titled " Pain Killer (Summer Rain)") is a song written by Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, produced by Tony Hoffer, and recorded by British band Turin Brakes. It was included on Turin Brakes' second album, Ether Song (2003), and was released as the second single from the album in February 2003. The song debuted at its peak of number five on the UK Singles Chart, at which point the single's formats were deleted. [1] Outside the United Kingdom, the song charted in Italy and the Netherlands at numbers 50 and 64, respectively. On 6 September 2012, all four Turin Brakes members played at a "Spirit of Talk Talk" evening at 229 Great Portland Street where they joined some former members of Talk Talk to play a few hits including It's My Life, with the band then playing a set of their own afterwards. Before playing the song "Painkiller" Gale announced to the audience that although it wouldn't be obvious to most people the song was heavily influenced by Talk Talk and by the work they did with producer Phill Brown in the Kent countryside some years ago. Turin Brakes are currently on their UK tour until the end of October, and performed for the first time at Towersey Festival this summer, the UK’s longest-running independent festival.The song’s lyrics have become something of an in-joke over the years, with fans speculating as to the hidden meanings behind the sometimes abstract, sometimes very literal lyrics. Knights isn’t about to spoil the fun after 19 years.

Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. That meant I was hearing all this wobbly synth music for the first time in years in the house, and the new record definitely has some wobbly synths on it. I love that because it keeps things fresh.

Following the success and stress of Ether Song, the band took a short break, but not before touring Australia and New Zealand and releasing a DJ mix album for Azuli Records' Late Night Tales series in February 2004. The mix album (2004) was a collection of some of their favourite songs and main influences, and also contained The Rolling Stones song "Moonlight Mile" as a cover. The band have done some DJ sets in the London area over the years.
