About this deal

Review to come, of course. This is Roald Dahl at nearly his best. I'm reading it too slowly for my taste but sometimes life gets in the way. I thought his best book is Going Solo actually. But Matilda is quite original. It's like the movie Home Alone, only the parents are the villains. It's a bit of an exaggeration, but I just threw it there. I can't help but feel that every teen who likes dark academia secretly has a copy of this book moldering somewhere in their bookcase. MATILDA is like the OG dark academia book, and so many things about it shaped tropes I still love today: shy and bookish heroines who are quietly brave; evil schools; strong female friendships; and off the wall crazysauce. It's a scathing criticism of the cruelty of English schools, but it's also a story of female empowerment.

After meeting some of Matilda’s friends such as Lavender and Bruce Bogtrotter while getting into adventures at the school, we eventually learn more about Miss Honey’s life. Miss Honey’s parents died when she was young, and she has been under the thumb of her aunt ever since. Her aunt controls her finances, bullies and belittles her, and has even taken her family home away from her. This aunt is none other than... Miss Trunchbull herself! Maguire, Gregory (22 November 2013). "Speaking Gobblefunk". The New York Times . Retrieved 9 March 2023. The book is also a challenge for young readers because of its length and creative use of language. For individual reading exercises, look at studying Matilda in middle to upper primary school, when children are looking for more advanced stories that speak to them at their level.Rowney, Jo-Anne (27 November 2018). "Netflix's new Roald Dahl animated series 'reimagines' Matilda and Willy Wonka". Daily Mirror . Retrieved 9 September 2022. At the age of five and a half, Matilda enters school and befriends her polite and compassionate teacher Jennifer Honey, who is astonished by her intellectual abilities. Miss Honey tries to move Matilda into a higher class, but the tyrannical headmistress, Miss Agatha Trunchbull, refuses. Miss Honey also tries to talk to Mr and Mrs Wormwood about their daughter's intelligence, but they ignore her, with the mother contending "brainy-ness" is an undesirable trait in a little girl.

The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.” Matilda is also a book about the power of reading. We learn about Matilda’s love of reading early on, and this is something that allows her to escape the painful situations she finds herself in, coming out the other end stronger. This makes it an ideal book to teach children who are just getting into reading full-length books for the first time. It might inspire them to take a deeper journey into reading. When I first read this book as a fifth grader, I absolutely connected with her. FINALLY! someone who likes to read as much as me!

Matilda grew to love her new teacher but she despised her headmistress... This little girl had so much anger built up inside of her that it was incredible... She developed powers because of all the electricity building up inside of her and she began to notice this durning one of her lessons with Ms. Trunchpull... Matilda found herself starring at a glass of water and demanding it to tip over and it did. Matilda practiced and practiced her new power and the only one she ever told about it was Ms. Honey who had a taste of what Matilda was capable of... The difference between Matilda and the Wormwoods is especially highlighted by their disgust at Matilda’s interests in reading. They have nothing in common with their daughter. Her father in particular is characterised as a liar and a cheat, due to his dodgy used-car business. So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.” Serena Allott (26 November 2010) Waltzing Matilda: Dahl's classic dances on to the stage The Daily TelegraphRoald Dahl has been named Britain's Best Male Writer; He writes: "If you want to see the world through the eyes of children, kneel on the ground on all fours, and look at the adults who roll their eyes over your head and command and forbid you." Judging by what your daughter Vanessa has learnt this term, this fact alone is more interesting than anything I have taught in the classroom.'
