About this deal

Before the hiding place was emptied by the authorities, Gies and the younger secretary Bep Voskuijl retrieved parts of Anne Frank's diaries and saved them in their desk drawer. But there were thousands of others throughout Europe who risked their own lives to save Jews from the Nazis and their horrific campaign of obliteration that was the Holocaust.

Miep, her husband and all of those that risked their lives to help the Jewish people were angels on earth. There were windows both front and back, all wood-trimmed and painted white, each window with a different white lace curtain, and never without flowers or plants. I’m told that every night when the sun goes down, somewhere in the world the curtain is going up on the stage play made from Anne’s diary. He brought books from the library, he visited the hiding place every day and went up and kept them company because they were lonely. When it became clear in mid-July 1945 that Anne had died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Miep handed the diary papers to Otto.

He brought books from the library, he visited the hiding place every day and went up and kept them company because they were lonely,” Alison Leslie Gold, co-author of Gies’ autobiography, tells the Independent’s Sheila Flynn.

Across the way was a little grassy playground, and on the other side of the playground was a Roman Catholic church whose ringing bells punctuated the day and sent birds flying against the sky: sparrows; pigeons, which were kept on the roofs; gulls. Kuno van der Horst, a 23-year-old student, went into hiding with the Gies family because he had refused to sign a declaration of loyalty to the Nazis. I sort of got the sense that, remembering as much history as I remembered about that period, that Miep and Jan, I had no idea they were still alive,” says Ms Gold, now 77. Tucked behind a door that was later covered by a bookcase, the hiding place consisted of two small bedrooms, a common space that doubled as a kitchen during the day and a bedroom at night, a bathroom, and an attic.

Slowly starting and then increasing rules about what Jewish people could and couldn’t do until it came to the point where they were taking them from their homes and sending them away to concentration camps. Miep lived to be 100, dying the month before her 101st birthday in 2010, and in that century exhibited stoic heroism rivaled by few — but modestly downplayed by Miep and her husband, Jan. So is Ms Gold, who chronicled her close and unexpected relationship with Miep and Jan in her book Found and Lost: Mittens, Miep and Shovelfuls of Dirt. We see her get a job working for Otto Frank’s company and the burgeoning friendship that forms between them, eventually expanding to include Miep’s boyfriend and later husband, Henk, and the rest of the Frank family, Otto’s wife, Edith, and their two children, Margot and Anne.

Jacket Sometimes used as another term for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps. In an interview, Gies said she was glad to help the families hide because she was extremely concerned after seeing what was happening to the Jews in Amsterdam. These are people we admire,” says Ms Rater, who worked on the series with her husband, Tony Phelan, and director Susanna Fogel. This biography gives another facet to the Anne Frank story and an idea of what many Dutch people did to help Jewish people. At their apartment, close to the Merwedeplein where the Franks had lived before going into hiding, Gies and her husband Jan (who belonged to the Dutch resistance) also hid an anti-Nazi university student. After the war, they resumed their friendship with Otto Frank, Anne's father, but they were reluctant to share in the publicity that the diary received.
