When a clever young goblin learns he is on the wrong side of history -- part of a evil overlord's army -- he is cast out of his castle, where he encounters a ragtag group of wizards, giants, princesses, and other fantastical creatures. Fantasia is featured in three lists that rank the greatest American films as determined by the American Film Institute. The film ranked number 58 in 100 Years... 100 Movies in 1998 before it was dropped from its 10th Anniversary revision in 2007, though it was nominated for inclusion. The 10 Top 10 list formed in 2008 placed Fantasia fifth under Animation.

UPC 786936163872.RKO balked at the idea of distributing Fantasia, which is described as a "longhair musical", and believed its duration of two hours and five minutes plus intermission was too long for a general release. It relaxed its exclusive distribution contract with Disney, which wanted a more prestigious exhibit in the form of a limited-run roadshow attraction. Thirteen roadshows were held across the United States, each involving two daily screenings with seat reservations booked in advance at higher prices and a fifteen-minute intermission. Disney hired film salesman Irving Ludwig to manage the first eleven engagements, who was given specific instructions regarding each aspect of the film's presentation, including the setup of outside theater marquees and curtain and lighting cues. Rhapsody in Blue is the first Fantasia segment with music from the American composer. It originated in 1995 when director and animator Eric Goldberg approached Al Hirschfeld about the idea of an animated short set to Gershwin's composition in the style of Hirschfeld's illustrations. In 1998, the Goldbergs pitched Rhapsody in Blue to Thomas Schumacher and received the green-light to produce it, and Hirschfeld agreed to serve as artistic consultant and allowed the animators to adapt his works. [43] Duke is named after jazz musician Duke Ellington. [44] The bottom of his toothpaste tube reads "NINA", an Easter egg referencing Hirschfeld's daughter Nina.
