Produced at the oldest distillery on the Isle of Skye, Talisker Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been made by the sea since 1830, with its smell and taste instantly connecting you to its rugged maritime home. Every sip is a taste of the Isle of Skye itself, one of the most remote, rugged, yet beautiful landscapes in Scotland. Double matured in port casks, Port Ruighe, pronounced ‘Portree’ is the Gaelic spelling of the once-bustling trading port on Skye: this malt is a toast to the Scottish traders who braved the high seas and were instrumental in the foundation of the port wine trade. The port finish combines Talisker’s powerful maritime character with succulent sweet notes of rich berry fruits for a superb taste experience. Each sip brings with it a sweet smokiness of a fading wood fire with the fruity richness of ripe plums. Talisker Port Ruighe was made for sipping neat. An essential gift for whisky connoisseurs, looking to explore new depths of flavour amongst smoky island malt whiskies. Nose: plenty of smoke. A briny note. Some sweetness from port. Red berries and strawberries. Milk chocolate. Minerals. A layer of honey. It’s somewhat floral too.The opening is an echo of the nose with rich marmalade overtones that are contrasting by crisp brine and oozing salted caramel. Shortly afterwards, the seaside connotations are reinforced by a hint of iodine, which is softened by voluptuous dark chocolate and ashy creosote. The bottle code on the Port Ruighe starts "L3 093" so was bottled approximately the end of March 2013. One has come to expect, and quite fairly, good things from Talisker. The standard 10, the lovely 18 and the delicious 57 North are the reasons for that. So, as a fan, it's disappointing to try hard and eke out positives from their last two No Age Statements; Storm & Port Ruighe. This is what I think about the latter.

Also on offer for the connoisseurs out there is Talisker's Port Ruighe and Distiller's Edition , the latter of which is double-matured in Amoroso sherry casks for a deep, rich flavour. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein.

Merchants with an interest in Portugal spied an opportunity. A gap was there to be filled and the full-bodied, robust wines of the Douro Valley were already proving popular with British consumers. The mountainous landscape that surrounded the valley made the transport of wine over land impossible so, instead, barrels were taken down the Douro River to the city of Oporto and from there, shipped to the British Isles, via the Atlantic Ocean. In terms of its appropriate use for different occasions, this is a wonderfully versatile whisky. Indeed, it’s something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sipping alone on a quiet evening with a cigar. However, it’s an excellent choice for special events or after a big dinner with friends. Very hot, at first, but resolves slowly into heavy notes of rhubarb, smoked salt, earthy peat, and caramel malt. The port is more readily detectable here, with light red fruits and a slight tartness.
