Ed: “We’re not at liberty to say exactly what samples are on the album, but there are some crazy combinations. Not that even the people concerned would be able to recognise themselves.” In March 1995, the Dust Brothers began their first international tour, which included the United States – where they played with Orbital and Underworld – then a series of European festivals. Also around this time, objections were filed by the original Dust Brothers over the use of their name, and so Rowlands and Simons had to decide on a new name. [3] They decided to call themselves the Chemical Brothers after "Chemical Beats". I sort of understand why some people don’t really like us,” says Tom. “There’s a buzz about us at the moment and it might seem as though we’ve come out of nowhere... ”

In 1996, Live at the Social Volume 1 was released by Heavenly Records, which became the Chemical Brothers' first mix CD (excluding Xmas Dust Up, a free album that came in a 1994 issue of NME). It was also the duo's first live album (excluding the EP Live 05). The album has received retrospective acclaim and continues to inspire. Muzik named it the second best dance album of all time in 2002 [21] and Q TV named it the 41st best album of the 1990s. AllMusic's top-marks review states "The Chemical Brothers' sound is big on bombast, replete with screeching guitar samples and lots of sirens and screaming divas. A breakthrough album of sorts, Exit Planet Dust was, upon its release, one of the few European post-techno albums to make any sort of headway into the stateside market." But this doesn't mean that nothing on it can be enjoyed. Even if the material isn't really up to today's standards (let alone to the ones of '97), it remains a quite nifty disc with a certain relaxed attitude towards it. The chillout tunes in the latter half of the album still do their job very fine (I there any way to accuse "Chico's Groove" or "One Too Many Mornings" of anything particular? I think not!), while the more busy first half does nothing less than offering you more than enough chances to bop your head in all kinds of groovy ways. And aren't those retro snare drums in "Three Little Birdies Down Beats" utterly charming? The first taster of their fourth album, Come With Us, was released as a single in September 2001. Originally almost 10 minutes long, it’s an unrelenting, four-to-the-floor acid epic with intense bursts of polyrhythmic conga and timbales. The title is repeated throughout, courtesy of a booming sample from Jim Ingram’s “Drumbeat,” also sampled on Jungle Brothers’ “Done By The Forces Of Nature.” 16. Music: Response ( Surrender, 1999) The centerpiece of Surrender begins in beatific fashion, with a looped sitar sample and ambient synth washes giving way to a loping groove-based section that wouldn’t sound out of place on The Beta Band’s The Three EPs. The calm is interrupted by the arrival of a pummelling beat, turning this Chemical Brothers song into a fantastical, no-holds-barred cosmic rave for the ages. 1. The Chemicals’ live set-up has been specially designed to enable the duo to stand shoulder-to-shoulder onstage. A decade on and the Chemical Brothers were still expanding their sound – the instrumental hook of “Galvanize” was a sample of the snaking string part from “Hadi Kedba Bayna,” a song by Moroccan singer Najat Aatabou. “Galvanize” was another example of The Chemical Brothers’ ability to create thrilling, party-ready dance music from disparate sources. It also won them a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2006. 8. Life Is Sweet ( Exit Planet Dust, 1995) Best British Dance Act – Chemical Brothers". Brits.co.uk.
