About this deal

Robert Rath did something that was necessary for the warhammer 40K lore; truly dissecting the perception of time that entities such as the necrons must experience. What does time mean for a being on the edge of immortality? What motivates a mind that has had his biological drives stripped away? The lords of the necrons such as Trazyn and Orikan are not automatons following a program, yet they are not truly free persons either. I got them knowing only that they looked cool. What I didn’t know is that I’d embarked on a minor obsession. By that night, I’d read the codex cover-to-cover at least twice. Kingmaker more than does the job. Rath realizes the Assassinorum as unique and distinct from the Inquisition despite an oft overlapping remit, giving the Officio a Cold War spy vibe that really fits. There’s no religious mumbo-jumbo and everything seems much more centralized than you get in Abnett’s or Wraight’s work. However this book is decidedly more about the process of conducting an operation than the Assassinorum as a whole. Rath focuses on how the assassins involved, all of whom are wonderfully well depicted in their interactions with each other and their targets, plan out/perform their mission. There’s also a lot of time spent getting to know the world of Dominion, to the point that this might be the best work on Imperial Knights in the canon. I generally don’t care for the ‘medieval nobles piloting mechs’ vibe it seems every Knight House has to have (why can’t they be diverse like the Titan Legios?), but Rath clearly put a lot of time into giving Dominion an engaging political identity. In the broad view I think it’s a brilliant move to focus so much attention on whomever the Assassin(s) are targeting. Hopefully it will mean future books in the series, if they happen, vary considerably with each entry. On the Knight World of Dominion, a Vindicare and a Callidus Assassin are tasked with eliminating a seditious leader and safely steering a pro-Imperial candidate to the throne.

No, no,’ scolded Ossuaria. ‘Phillias, activate the signal dampeners. Anything you two say we shall all be a party to. No colluding on testimony–’ In time, these servants realised that they could not hide from even their own deaths forever, and that their skills must be passed on to a new generation if their great work was to continue. Thus, they finally revealed their existence to the Emperor. He saw, sorrowfully, the necessity for their existence and the terrible duty that they had taken upon themselves and he was most pleased. Great temples were constructed and the most skillful and deadly youths were sought out to train at them. Thus was the Officio Assassinorum created in secret, and the names of Callidus, Venenum, Culexus, Vindicare, Eversor and Vanus were forever immortalised. The strongest survived their rigorous training, and in turn passed on their skills to others. New skills were learnt and new temples of death were later founded; the art of blade and pistol, poison and garrote were honed in every aspect conceivable. So it is that there is no world in the galaxy beyond the Emperor's rule; no enemy beyond the Emperor's wrath. In so many words: Kingmaker has the structure of a heist movie (assemble your team, make a plan, explain how it will go perfectly, deal with the inevitable twist) transplanted into the exaggerated and gothic Warhammer 40k setting. I was hoping that the idea would be just the right combination of a classic trope and a radical setting to work! For non- psykers this will usually be little more than a minute spark. For psykers, however, their soul blazes like a shining beacon that can be seen by other psykers and creatures that live within the Warp. The more powerful the psyker, the brighter their soul burns within the realm of the Empyrean. Has anyone read this without reading the sequels? I'm itching it fit this book in, but I don't have the desire to read ebooks compared to audio/physical books right now. Assassins are typically deployed alone wherever feasible, having been trained to operate extensively behind enemy lines with no support. Given the sheer potential political power of this Adepta and the fact that its operatives are known to have been used against rival High Lords of Terra in the past, the authorization to assassinate a target must come from the very highest echelons of Imperial command. For this reason, Assassins are watched very closely to make sure that they are under the control of the Imperium.

Black Library Pre-orders – Snipers, Serpents, and a World

Each temple is led by an official known as a "director primus" while the Officio Assassinorum as a whole is led by the Imperium's grand master of assassins. I got this primarily for the assassins, but it was also a surprisingly fun look at Knight Households as well. The politics between two feuding families is the engine behind their story, and it doesn't disappoint. There's not a dull moment with them. Really solid 40k book and a huge surprise. I find the one of novels can be a hit or miss sometimes but this was fantastic. The main group of assassins were all really likeable and I really enjoyed the way they interacted with each other. Reminded me of the Eisenhorn books in that respect. Tarzyn and Orkiam are wonderfully realized and expressed through the writing. One living in the past and the other in the future and how it all interlinks is just glorious. It is quite possible for a Callidus operative to complete their task without the enemy force in question knowing they have been there at all. However, as the tumultuous times of the 41st Millennium draw to a close, the Callidus Temple is making its presence felt upon the fields of battle more so than ever.

One of the temple's maxims is that a clean kill can only be made from an excellent firing position, and Vindicare Assassins have been known to occupy a given location for solar weeks, waiting for their quarry to reveal himself before finally taking the perfect shot. By meditating on the immortal glory of the Emperor, these superb marksmen can slow down their metabolism to an almost hibernatory state. Adamus Temple - The Adamus Temple, originally known as the Clade Adamus, was the oldest of the clades of the Officio Assassinorum during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. It is unclear whether it survives into the 41st Millennium as one of the Officio Assassinorum's present temples. Clade Adamus Assassins are master swordsmen and melee specialists, drawing on some of the most ancient blade-master traditions of Old Earth. Adamus Assassins were dedicated to decapitation strikes intended to eliminate an enemy military force's command and control. I recently wanted some light reading since it's summer and so decided to read Assassinorum: Kingmaker and folks, it's really, really good.
