In response to a call by the UN Special Rapporteur for submissions protecting human rights during and after the COVID-19 pandemic [11], Anti-Slavery International shared their 2020 global survey findings. Its Free the Slaves, and Freedom from Slavery Forum, Survey: The impact and response to Covid-19, May 2020 revealed that as in previous global emergencies, national responses are predominantly not reaching those in slavery. Of the respondents, 73% said their Government had not included or had scarcely included the needs and rights of people affected by slavery (45% and 28% respectively). 77% said that their Government had not introduced specific measures for people in slavery, and 74% said that emergency responders were not being made aware of the needs of populations affected by modern slavery. Also, science and technology constitute a power mass movement, and many scientists gratify their need for power through identification with this mass movement. Thus science marches on blindly, without regard to the real welfare of the human race or to any other standard, obedient only to the psychological needs of the scientists and of the government officials and corporation executives who provide the funds for research. This, as the name suggests, is the transportation, recruitment and/or harboring of people for the purpose of exploitation. This usually involves a constant threat of violence or other coercion. Descent-based slavery is still a thing in places There are many people today who see that modern society is heading toward disaster in one form or another, and who moreover recognize technology as the common thread linking the principal dangers that hang over us.That said, we could clearly opt to close our eyes and ears to the man. But this solves nothing. We are still left facing the same issues, and having to answer the same difficult questions. In dealing with his writings perhaps we do dignify him. But more importantly, we dignify our children, the natural world, and ourselves—because it is these that will bear the consequences of our actions. Let's say, hypothetically, we find a man born and raised as a nomadic hunter-gatherer in the wilds of sub-Saharan Africa, utterly unaffected by civilization and high technology. We wish to ‘help’ him by introducing him, progressively over three months, to all the benefits of modern life. So we take him, first, to a small farm, and show him how we grow domesticated crops and raise domesticated animals—organisms he has never seen in the wild. We introduce him to sowing, weeding, harvesting, animal husbandry. We allow him one month to adapt. Dynarski et al (2007). Among their main findings:“Test scores were not significantly higher in classrooms using selected reading and mathematics software products.”

The focus of socialization has shifted from sex to aggression in modern times. This statement suggests that in modern times, the primary focus of socialization and control has shifted from sexual behavior and desires to aggressive behavior and impulses. In other words, rather than focusing on repressing or controlling people’s sexual feelings, as was perhaps more common in the Victorian period, modern society is more concerned with controlling aggression and violent behavior. This shift may be due to changes in societal values, the development of new technologies or social structures, or other factors. Meanwhile, fierce competition among global self-prop systems will have led to such drastic and rapid alterations in the Earth's climate, the composition of its atmosphere, the chemistry of its oceans, and so forth, that the effect on the biosphere will be devastating. ... We will argue that if the development of the technological world-system is allowed to proceed to its logical conclusion, then in all probability the Earth will be left a dead planet-a planet on which nothing will remain alive except, maybe, some of the simplest organisms-certain bacteria, algae, etc.-that are capable of surviving under extreme conditions. If the system breaks down the consequences will still be very painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down it had best break down sooner rather than later. See Reuters news story (27 April 2007) on a report of the Irish government: “Text messaging harms written language.” Teens were found to be “unduly reliant on short sentences, simple tenses, and a limited vocabulary.”Kaczynski is a careful, insightful thinker who makes forceful arguments against technology...He is clear, precise, and articulate. [His] writing style is perfectly suited to the task." As reported in the Independent, “using a mobile phone for more than 10 years increases the risk of getting brain cancer” (7 October 2007). Long-term users “are twice as likely to get a malignant tumor on the side of the brain where they hold the handset.” See Hardell et al (2007). The entire focus of this book is the problem of technology: where we stand today, what kind of imminent future we are facing, and what we ought to do about it. Kaczynski's writings revolve around a core argument against modern technology. To briefly recap that argument:

So what shall we do? We are faced with a whole range of threats to our wellbeing, and all of them—literally, all major problems confronting humanity—are created or enabled by advanced technology. Shall we just sit here and take it, stoically? Shall we wring our hands, bemoaning the fact that the system is too large, too impenetrable, too unmovable to change? Shall we ask our leaders for help? Shall we pray to God? Shall we wait for the scientists and technologists to save us? What irony—to look to technology to save us from itself! Environmental legislation has failed to protect the environment despite initially appearing to do so.

Day by day, the machines are gaining ground upon us; day by day we are becoming more subservient to them… The time will come when the machines will hold the real supremacy over the world and its inhabitants… Our opinion is that war to the death should be instantly proclaimed against them.
