About this deal

There are 2 different Olympus 14-42mm lenses - the EZ model and the IIR model - both are f.3.5-5.6 - one seems to be a pancake design and the other traditional in design. However, if you are planning on shooting handheld in low light, you will be better served with a fast prime such as the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 II. The minimum focusing distance is unchanged at 25cm, but the maximum magnification is now 0.19x (equivalent to 0.38x on a 35mm camera), versus 0.24x (0.48x equivalent) in the previous design. Olympus PEN E-PL7 + Olympus M.Zuiko 14‑42mm f/3.5‑5.6 EZ (1/320 sec, ISO200, f/7.1) (Image credit: James Artaius) Olympus M.Zuiko 14‑42mm f/3.5‑5.6 EZ: Performance If you are purchasing your first micro four-thirds camera and looking at an Olympus that comes with this lens, you might as well get it! Especially if you are a novice photographer that will get much use out of a standard zoom.

Olympus 14-42mm lens review Just posted! Olympus 14-42mm lens review

This lens isn't a ''constant'' lens, in that as you increase the focal length, the widest aperture is restricted (showing a higher f-number). The following table reflects the changes: Focal length The lens isn't designed specifically for macro work, but it's not that bad: a minimum focusing distance of just under 10 inches (25cm), with a magnification ratio of 0.23x. In terms of the quality of the moving parts, the zoom ring, focus ring, and collapsing mechanism all seem well-dampened and nicely built, at least considering the all-plastic build. That versatile focal range means that you really can slap this one single lens on the front of your camera and be covered for almost any shooting situation –making it a perfect choice for street shooting, travel photography, or just everyday walkabout use. In fact, it's so slim that you can leave it on your camera in place of a body cap, so that you can always grab your camera and shoot without faffing for a lens. We've previously tested each lens individually using the ePHOTOzine test bench. you can see results here: Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 MkI and Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 MkII. Our results show that while both lenses are very good, the MKI has the better performance especially at the edges of the frame when shooting wide open. When you stop down the lenses equal out. So if low light shooting is important you'd be better looking out for the older lens. While size isn't the only thing that the Olympus M.Zuiko 14‑42mm f/3.5‑5.6 EZ has going for it, it's a pretty big deal. Well, a pretty small one. But there are plenty of reasons why this is the best pancake lens on the market –and why it has been included as a kit lens for years with the best Olympus cameras (OM System).

I focused on window frame in the center. Center performance is fine but upper right corner is just mush. The shingles, and patio door on the right is soft. Railing on the right is soft too but I can forgive that because I shot it near wide open. I'm not looking at the steps in the foreground because that probably outside the DoF. Barrel distortion is annoying too. We can talk and talk and argue ***** about the sharpness or dynamic range or "pop" but they are not allowing us to get the most important moments in our lives. And those who say that they can wait that X lens comes available or X body gets improvement, they are wasting time. Time that can be far more important than anything else here at dpreview. Nikon's entry-level DSLR is compact, inexpensive and produces top-quality images. But it can't compete with the OM-D E-M10 III for size or sophistication. It's a great buy on a budget, but its features are relatively limited.
