About this deal

There is nothing wrong with using any of these pseudo-waxes in your products. You should however be aware that you’re paying a much higher price than they are really worth and that these ingredients are not true waxes (esters of fatty alcohols). These are hardened vegetable oils sold as precious vegan waxes – and it’s not even always clear which vegetable oils have been used in the process. It is also worth noting that Candelilla wax is an effective substitute for Carnauba wax and Beeswax. What are the benefits of Candelilla wax?

The succulent plant candelilla (Euphorbia antisyphilitica) is native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is notable for its waxy leaves and stems, which aid in water conservation in its native arid habitat. The scent of both waxes is totally different; preference is completely personal. There is a difference in raw materials and in finished products, so don’t judge by sniffing the wax pellets only.

As a side note, we have seen many formulators and students using bees and other natural cosmetic waxes as emulsifiers. If you want to learn why this is a mission impossible, read our post on beeswax is not an emulsifier. Vegan Cosmetic Waxes This is because bacteria and fungi in the soil are the major organisms involved in breaking down organic and plant-based matter. 8. Is Candelilla Wax Compostable? To extract the wax, the Candelilla plants are placed in iron cauldrons – called “pailas” by the Candelilleros – with a mixture of water and sulfuric acid.

Candelilla wax is 100% pure, has a natural wax like aroma and is yellow in colour, very similar in appearance with beeswax. This is why it is often used as a vegan alternative to beeswax. What are some of the benefits of candelilla wax?But you should be careful composting products that contain candelilla wax as well as chemicals and other synthetic ingredients. The FDA also regulates cosmetics and has approved candelilla for use in beauty products as well. 2 Sustainable Alternatives To Candelilla Wax Candelilla wax is probably the most frequently used wax when formulators look fora beeswax substitute. It is derived from the leaves of the Mexican shrub Euphorbia antisyphilitica. The unrefined wax has a deep yellow colour and a very decent scent. It is available in bleached variations with lighter colour as well. Water: Candelilla plants are drought-tolerant and do not need to be watered frequently. Allow the soil to completely dry between waterings. Overwatering can result in root rot. Candelilla Wax is known to be an effective binding agent that easily fuses ingredients. This quality makes it easy to incorporate it into most other waxes as well as resins, both natural and synthetic. This emulsifying property mainly helps water and oil constituents to bind together with a smooth uniformity, a necessary effect for products like moisturizers, such as lotion bars, creams, and balms, to which Candelilla Wax is known to offer hydrating properties and easy spread over the skin’s surface.
