About this deal

Temperatures are set to be around 19C when doors open at 5pm, dropping to 16C by 9pm, but at least there's no rain currently in the forecast. Rob Gretton invited Dave Rofe (recently installed as resident cocktail bar DJ and one of the attendees of that first meeting) to kick the process off by compiling a list of potential tracks. The book was safe - it had very little in the way of up-front running costs, was also designed in-house, and was published by a third party: IMP - purveyors of rock sheet music (originally the publishing wing of Warners, now owned by Faber). Signing off the notices of this groundbreaking event were the four words that had, by now, become the mission statement of the whole arçienda movement: "Hair by Vidal Sassoon".

The gig will mark Haçienda Classical’s seventh Castlefield live event in the past eight years, where they will be joined by special guests Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry and Peter Hook. Knuckles took it to outer space on this dub though - an absolutely stunning rework that could be mixed into the vocal to give an orgasmic 10+ minutes of pure Chaka Gold. House music was still underground – there were some commercial hits, but outside of specialist shows the best music was still only being heard in a few clubs. Dave Seaman: An all time classic Mike Pickering Hacienda tune that frequently finished the night at Friday’s legendary Nude parties. The influence of the mix of Latin and early house being played and appreciated on the ‘Nude’ night dancefloor is obvious (Topping himself described the song as “a blend of Tito Puente and Adonis”).

When I began incorporating acid house in 1987, Noel was on that too; in his words, “It fucking blew my mind”. Danny Howells: This struck a chord with me from the start, mainly as it was based on Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft”. Sasha was eighteen when he first visited the club; “Experiencing all that incredible music for the first time was like seeing the light really.I had the honour of interviewing Frankie at his home in New York in 1988 when I was Editor of Mixmag. The younger generation started coming into the Hacienda in the mid-1980s rejected a lot of this anti-disco prejudice. But, having gone over budget in May with the party celebrations and with no major label backing, the bargain licence bill simply couldn't be funded. A rough and ready sample heavy production from the man behind the Gee Street label (Stereo MCs, Jungle Brothers etc) that you would hear everywhere.

As ticketholders will know if they've been before, it's always a full-on party vibe at the Hacienda Classical gigs. On Saturday, Manchester rewound 20 years and more as the Happy Mondays headlined a special Hacienda revival night at the Albert Hall. In the compilation album business licensing can be highly profitable for the label, but not so for the artist. So many music fans gravitated to the Hacienda picked up inspiration and graduated to become successful DJs and musicians. The idea for the album originated from the Wythenshawe wing of the Haçienda / Factory management (that had unsuccessfully campaigned for a Factory Dance label years earlier only to be told that dance was, in fact, "dead"). Songs are arranged as mashups and medleys that blend into each other in a similar fashion to that of a DJ, ensuring a seamless night of dance music. Justin Robertson for example; “The Hacienda is completely the reason I’m doing what I’m doing now,” he says. From their second album came this devastatingly good overhaul of “Wrote for Luck”, by none other than Yazoo/Erasure’s Vince Clark.

It’s quite difficult to express just how influential “Strings of Life” was on both the house and techno scenes, or to imagine how different house and techno would have been had this record never been made. Without a doubt, The Haçienda and its crowd know just how to light this city up and party like there’s no tomorrow. That sublime arpeggio and bassline combination topped off by Jamie Principle’s soulful vocal still creates goosebumps to this day. As the Hit Squad’s hearts, souls and ears were turned on to early house and techno, they metamorphosed into 808 State, their debut album Newbuild reflected the trancey/druggy culture of acid house (tracks like ‘Flow Coma’ and ‘E Talk’).Register for a See account here to import your Spotify library or ‘follow’ artists you find on our site to add them to your ‘favourites’. Gerald was so keen to get ‘Voodoo Ray’ played by at the club he provided early versions on cassette to Mike Pickering and to Dasilva. The crowd interview clips should be on their own track so you can choose to listen or skip them as desired.
