McVicar chipped his way through the brick wall of a shower room, replacing bricks with papier mache replicas. This may seem fanciful, but I always reckoned that the dog he adopted – a very wild creature – was a sort of surrogate for his own lost powers. Important memoir of a professional criminal, formed of two parts: the first written while McVicar was at liberty following his sensational escape from maximum security wing of Durham Prison; the second while in prison after recapture, in which he attempts to analyse and explain his criminality. After jumping the prison wall, McVicar found himself in unfamiliar surroundings, but in his autobiography, McVicar by Himself, he gives a heart-racing description of the streets and features that he encountered during his night-time escape.

First published in 1974, it led to the film "McVicar" (1980) and also influenced Stephen King's Shawshank's Redemption. His first arrest came in 1956 when he was sent to a remand home in Essex and took part in his first escape. In an article for Spiked in 1995 he suggested that the Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie had taken performance- enhancing drugs. The text was handwritten, then smuggled out of prison, but its editor, Goronwy Rees, was refused access to the author. He says he walked along a landscaped riverside walk for perhaps half-a-mile until his path was blocked by a factory area.On his release he became a journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, the Guardian, Punch, the New Statesman, Time Out and Spiked. Bill Curbishley and Roy Baird acted as producers, and the film received a nomination in 1981 for Best Picture at MystFest, the International Mystery Film Festival of Cattolica. Next day, as a massive police hunt was mobilised and TV crews and newspaper men rushed to Durham, McVicar kept away from the roads and followed the course of the river and railway for seven miles, finally reaching Chester-le-Street. McVicar had, over time, carefully chipped his way through the wall in the shower room, painstakingly replacing each brick with a papier-mache replica.
