During World War II, in 1943, the hamlet was commandeered by American soldiers who practised manoeuvres for the D-day landings. Most training took place on Saunton Sands/ Braunton Burrows. After the war, Croyde returned to being a predominantly holiday resort. There is a small chance that roads, bridges and railway lines could close, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights Since 1999, Croyde has hosted an annual surfing and music festival (GoldCoast Oceanfest) on the weekend closest to the summer solstice. One of the most popular walking trails in the village is the National Trust’s Baggy Point, which makes for some excellent coastal walking and has breath taking views as well as being generally accessible for walkers of all ages and abilities. The village itself remains largely unspoiled from time gone by and has an old world feel to it which is well respected by the surfing community and holiday makers as well as residents. The centre is a hub of lovely places to stay and eat with many of the eateries offering locally sourced, seasonal produce on their menus. The surfing capital of North Devon with great family facilities and a vibrant, friendly atmosphere, the pretty village of Croyde is one of North Devon’s most renowned seaside locations. Baggy Point is a fantastic walk along clifftops and will reward you with stunning views over Croyde Bay. The landscape is covered in pretty flowers during the summer months. The whole village and surrounding area is within the North Devon AONB and boasts superb natural scenery. The arrow shows the average direction of the waves 1-2 miles out to sea. It indicates how sheltered the Unsettled at the start of this period, with showers, outbreaks of rain and generally breezy, although the strongest of the winds associated with this system will likely affect France as opposed to the UK, there does still remain the possibility of disruptive winds accompanying further heavy rain across southern areas. Into next week, it looks to stay predominantly unsettled with areas of low pressure bringing further rain or showers and brisk winds at times. However towards the middle of the month there is the possibility of slightly more settled, drier conditions developing, particularly further to the north.
