This time the same mix of previously mentioned elements combine into a tale about two British operatives working with Frank to bring to justice some IRA terrorists that set off a bomb in Hells Kitchen. IN THE BEGINNING - A welcome appearance by David Lieberman aka "Micro", who appeared in the Netflix Punisher series. An interesting cat-and-mouse game as he uses his knowledge of Frank to help the CIA capture the man and try to recruit him, even as other criminals are out for his head. It doesn't go well. I actually really liked this one quite a bit, mostly because even as Micro is betraying Frank, he's doing it because he cares for Frank and wants to help him, maybe even redeem him. The first story is the superlative "Born". It tells the tale of Capt. Castle, USMC, in Vietnam. It is dark, violent and grim. It is one of the finest "pre-origin" origin tales out there. We see the darkness and the violence that is Frank Castle. It is obvious why he manifests as the psychopathic killer that is the bane of the criminal community. One of the best Punisher tales around. The Punisher Complete collection is a must read for any Punisher fan. It is a collection of the delightfully vulgar and violent Garth Ennis run on the Punisher.Set an undisclosed amount of years after the Garth Ennis series, New York crime bosses are trying to come up with a plan to take out the Punisher. There has been rumors of a mythical Kingpin of Crime for years until Wilson Fisk comes up with a plan to create this Kingpin as a target for the Punisher. As the Punisher tries to take out the Kingpin, the crime bosses will be free to do their business. But Wilson Fisk has grander plans. As he begins to create the fictional Kingpin, he actually becomes the real Kingpin and uniting New York’s crime families. In his rise to power, he hires the assassin Bullseye to once and for all take out the Punisher. I honestly couldn’t have imagined a better artist than Steve Dillon for this book. He is the definitive, quintessential Punisher artist, and the only penciler that could possibly have killed our beloved mass murderer the way he deserved to die. Physically outmatching in Castle in spectacular fashion, he makes for a great antagonist. Only shortcoming of this story is that there is no personal aspect of the story that gives a more emotional insight into Frank Castle/The Punisher – so it feels a bit more functional than the stories that have come before. A good read nonetheless. Why is this Punisher so good? The characterization. Frank never wavers and never doubts. He doesn't grandstand. He just does what he does. Damn everyone and everything else. Frank's not insane or disillusioned. He knows what he is. That and the dark humored storytelling.

The next arc is more serious where Frank goes to stop basically a warmonger who he didn't finish off before. This also leads to old friends, lots of betrayals, and some actual sad deaths. All of this worked and the ending to the arc was pretty good. A little long but good.Punisher: Year One– This origin tale by Dan Abnett and Dale Eaglesham covers the days and weeks following the murder of his family. Finally we get “Kitchen Irish” which more than makes up for any of the previous tale’s shortcomings. It's a lovely tale of criminal rivalry and a dead man’s millions.
