About this deal

If you grow your tree in a fan shape, you may need to protect the blossom with fleece in the spring to protect it from a late frost. This is not necessary when growing the trees as bushes or standards. When laetrile is processed by the body, it changes to cyanide. Cyanide is a type of poison which is thought to kill cancer cells. There is not enough reliable scientific evidence to say laetrile can treat cancer.

The NCI add that the FDA “has not approved laetrile as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition.” What about vitamin B-15? We get this question very often, since apricot kernels are not being sold as a food product any longer (see above) they cannot be certified organic. Without this legal thumbs up from an organic certifying body there’s no way we can label them as organic. A bitter apricot tree is gifted to a daughter when married so that she can collect bitter kernels and make hair oil for her hair make up and the kernels ground to make use as a natural exfoliate.

A word of caution

People who follow these dose recommendations are likely to be exposed to cyanide levels that cause cyanide poisoning. Estimates state that eating 50 to 60 apricot kernels could deliver a lethal dose of cyanide. Cyanide poisoning can occur at much lower levels, however.

Akyildiz, B. N., Kurtoğlu, S., Kondolot, M., Tunç, A. (2013, July 18). Cyanide poisoning caused by ingestion of apricot seeds [Abstract]. Annals of Tropical Paediatrics, 30(1), 39-43 However, as long ago as 1980, scientists concluded that calcium pangamate can cause genetic mutations and has a “90-percent probability” of causing rather than curing cancer. Apricot kernel oil is high in essential fatty acids. These are necessary for human health, but the human body cannot produce them, so people must take them in through diet. Cyanide is present in many forms, but can kill in large enough doses and is considered a poison. Cyanide poisoning can occur acutely (with one exposure) or over time.

Oil and kernels from the bitter variety of apricot kernel are often ingredients in cosmetics, such as body oil, face cream, lip balm, and essential oil.

A three-year-old tree can produce at least 20 fruits; these appear in clusters on wood that is at least one year old. Don’t thin the fruits, as you would with apple trees and pear trees, but leave them to develop naturally. When the crop starts to swell, water the tree thoroughly and regularly. Harvest the fruits only when they are fully ripe and come off the tree easily.

The earliest record of their use is thought to have been thousands of years ago in China. They are noted in one of the great Herbal Medicine books, attributed to the mythical Chinese Sovereign Shennong in 2800 B.C., that was written around 200 A.D. The original texts no longer exist. It was then exported into the Mediterranean around Roman times. What do Bittter Apricot Kernels look like? People use oil pressed from the sweet kernel can be used for cooking in the same way as they might use sweet almond oil. Processed foods, such as amaretto biscuits, almond finger biscuits, and apricot jams, contain apricot kernels.
