What if he doesn't want to join the fight, once the plan of the magpies finally becomes known (and it doesn't unfold until much later on, with it being mostly kept a mystery)? He has to find his courage, and right his wrongs through those journeys. I dont know...There are better ways to handle this setup and the author did it poorly.

Despite the fact that these three lines, and those which follow, do not all rhyme, they still maintain a very song-like quality. This is due to their very similar lengths and structures. One For Sorrow’is commonly interpreted as a superstitious nursery rhyme about magpies and what they mean.I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for an advance copy of One for Sorrow, the seventh novel to feature DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach of the Edinburgh Police. Usually, I'm not into ghost stories, but in this one, the characters were very developped and very distinct. The narrating was awesome you almost belong to that period, I felt the urge to slap Annie in the first chapters and shoot Elsie in the last ones because man, that litte girl was seriously creepy. Ava Turner is attending the funeral of her dear friend and pathologist, she then has to go and watch the video of how the death happened. We also learn the life of Quinn Mactavish a young woman who was push to her limits and ended her life after her relationship and then abused by Liam Cook. Only at the end of the story we find out the link between the two stories.

If you have read Helen Fields' last novel, The Shadow Man, then you may well recognise one of the guest characters in the book. It was great to see Connie Woolwine pop up to provide some well needed insight into the mind of the killer, something that worked to reinforce my assertions about the who, if not wholly the what. She is a quirky character, but I do love her direct style and forthright attitude. She gives Callanach some much needed guidance, and not just into the case, perhaps allowing him the room to lay some old demons to rest. Even Lively seems to appreciate her style, and he is no easy character to win over. John Brand was an English antiquarian and Church of England clergyman who was appointed Secretary to the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1784. The phrase “popular antiquities” later became known as folklore, a term coined by William John Thoms in 1846.This is a suspenseful story that’s a mixture of historical fiction and a children’s ghost story. I didn’t want to stop reading this because I HAD to know what happened next. I was so engrossed in this story that I didn’t watch the baseball game on TV. I watch just about every Baltimore Orioles game, but I couldn’t put this down, so I skipped the game. I loved the appearances of characters from other standalone books by Helen fields. These characters are so well written they truly feel real. The relationships between the characters are so believable and natural, that you can truly picture the conversations and connections between the characters leaving you not just invested but feeling them really come alive. Fantastic book. Enjoyed the series. Great characterisation as usual of Ava and Luc. Well written and good suspense. I couldn't put it down! Edinburgh is targeted by a bomber and it's up to Ava and Luc to find the answers...What is the ultimate price... I was gripped from start to finish by the well written,twisty and suspenseful plot. There is a dual timeline with 2 stories going on, so plenty of action and a relentless pace throughout .l found the main characters had great depth and the secondary characters were really well developed which made this so much more than a police procedural read.Highly recommended l now need to read the rest before the next one comes out!!

Eagles are elegant and majestic and barely useful. They're almost extinct and never ever poach or eat carrion. The book even makes a point to say they're too noble to eat robins, but they do! In real life, they love to grab songbirds and eat them. Songbirds are prey, all animals are prey to an eagle, even a deer! But one rabbit helps them so they vow to never eat rabbits again. This tied in with something else down below will elaborate on how stupid that decision is. Publication date is February 17, 2022 by Avon Books U.K. Genre: General Fiction, Mystery, Thrillers. The writing is seriously clever, the actions of the killer make this book truly terrifying, but the twists add another level of surprise that truly leave you in awe and on the edge of your seat.

In 1846 the rhyme was added to Proverbs and Popular Saying of the Seasons by Michael Aislabie Denham, an English merchant and collector of folklore. What a disappointment! "An epic tale in the tradition of 'Watership Down' and 'Lord of the Rings'..." it says on the front cover, but the only resemblance (as so often with that sort of comparison) is that the birds can talk. I can't recommend this book highly enough, one of the very best books from one of the best authors in the genre.

When it becomes clear that with every tip-off they are walking into a trap designed to kill them too, Ava and Luc know that finding the truth could mean paying the ultimate price.I have no idea what’s the point of this book. The whole thing was pretty pointless and none of girls changed after this whole ordeal. The ending and resolution was very anticlimatic and dissapointing that I literally went “WTF??”. Appearently the author sold the film rights to Disney in the hopes of it getting adapted to the silver screen. Fortunately, that was over two decades ago and I have heard nothing since. I can certainly say they dodged a bullet here. Mediocre books do not deserve such an honor while superior books never get the recognition they deserve. I am relieved nothing has been discussed further regarding a future film of this travesty. I hope it stays forgotten in the dust forever. The song starts off similar to original rhymes but had an additional tenth bird that was not to be missed; in this case that was of course the next episode of the series.
