About this deal

YourTravelMates is a social platform where every traveler can share their experiences, find awesome travel buddies and gain invaluable knowledge from locals. The service welcomes everyone who is interested in traveling to join and help build the greatest travel community out there. It is a trip planning platform - a home for more than 50 000 travelers. The service aims to make travel experiences and getaways unforgettable by helping members find their most desired travel partner or companion from a varied list of users, bridging the gap between cultures, countries and travel experiences. GFXBench 5.0 is a cross-platform GPU performance benchmark that stress-tests both low-level routines like texturing and high-level, game-like image rendering. We run two tests: Aztec Ruins (1440p) and Car Chase (1080p), which exercise graphics and compute shaders—but Aztec Ruins relies on the OpenGL application programming interface (API), while Car Chase uses hardware tessellation. We record the results in frames per second (fps); higher numbers are better. On Aztec Ruins, the MacBook was far in front at 78fps, followed by the TravelMate at 48fps, on down to the Latitude at 40fps. With Car Chase, likewise, the MacBook blew the others away, at 178fps. Again, the TravelMate was second, at 114fps, down to the Latitude, at 97fps. Setting aside from the MacBook's strong performance on GFXBench, the TravelMate was the top graphics performer among the laptops with Iris Xe, but they are a close clustering. Other tests in the chart above include HandBrake 1.4, our video transcoder test, which measures the time to convert a 12-minute 4K video to a 1080p format. The TravelMate excelled here, with the second-best score, the ThinkPad edging it by 12 seconds; thus both units are getting excellent use of the CPU for this type of activity. (Lower times are best on this test.) All these desktop replacements, except the ThinkBook 16p, show exemplary battery life. Four of them also present perfectly fine screen quality for business apps, if not enough for prepress or photo editing jobs, but the TravelMate's display just doesn't cut it—unacceptably dim even at peak brightness, with wretched color coverage. As we said, this is one laptop that cries out for connecting to an external monitor. Considering that this laptop is designated a ‘Travelmate’, the mass of this machine is on the high side at 1.9 kg or over 4 lbs. That’s plenty to be carrying around, and this isn’t the machine you can practically hold with one hand and operate with the other.

Other than the MacBook Air, the four comparison systems all have the latest Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics. The Air is also the only one of the bunch without an Intel CPU; that's because Apple developed its own ARM-based processor, the M1, which also includes integrated graphics as part of the chip. The M1 doesn't run all of the performance benchmarks PCMag uses (we'll get to the rest below), but it excels on those it does run. The highlight of this P2 SKU is undoubtedly the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U processor, a design we’ve seen previously that sports ten cores and can process 12 threads simultaneously. We also liked the keyboard, which is big enough to have a numeric pad, even if it’s a little narrow, and the touchpad is also well-sized, but because of the numeric pad offset, it’s not very central. What’s interesting about this is that the user experience is largely the same, and we didn’t notice any significant slowdowns using the P4. The performance offered on this machine is something of a mixed bag. We’ve previously tested other machines using the same Core i5-1235U and got better scores than these, and the difference may be down to the memory specs. With this wide selection of potential hardware, it's probably the best plan to decide what your budget limits are and then see what options Acer has for that money. One side note to our internal investigations was the battery, the one that Acer claims is 56 Whr. Based on a quoted voltage and amperage printed on the battery, our maths says 54.5 Whr is a more accurate number. However, for those that travel extensively with their machine, the Travelmate P2 probably isn’t ideal from a portability perspective. If that’s one of the best, the worst is undoubtedly the screen. We’re unsure what the exact technology used in the display is, but it is not bright, and the viewing angles aren’t great, suggesting that it isn’t an IPS screen. We test Windows PCs' graphics with two DirectX 12 gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark, Night Raid (more modest, suitable for laptops with integrated graphics) and Time Spy (more demanding, suitable for gaming rigs with discrete GPUs).

MIL-STD 810G/H is a testing protocol conducted in controlled settings and does not guarantee future performance in all situations. Do not attempt to simulate these tests, as damage resulting from this will not be covered by Acer's standard warranty. The ThinkPad topped 3DMark's Night Raid test, at 16,228 points, followed by the EliteBook (14,538 points), the TravelMate (14,534) and the Latitude (14,015). The Night Raid test is modest, suitable for laptops with integrated graphics—though the Intel Iris Xe GPU may be advanced enough to have pushed the four systems employing it nearly into what was in the past low-end dedicated-graphics-card territory.3DMark's Time Spy is more demanding, suitable for higher-end computers with advanced graphics. Here, the Latitude scored best, at 1,676. The TravelMate was last, at 1,643, but note the tiny 33-point gap. Battery life is measured under specific test settings and conditions pursuant to MobileMark 2014. Actual battery life may vary considerably by specifications, depending on product model, configuration, applications, power management settings, operating conditions, and features utilized. Performance variation also arises based on components in use, which includes but is not limited to the processor, RAM capacity, storage, display, resolution, etc. This version of the Travelmate P2 had some highs and a few lows, but most models are good value for money, considering the functionality and performance offered and the price asked. Volume will range from 141% to 237% higher than standard laptops depending on the files played on this Chromebook. This is a more elegant and lighter machine that is reasonably easy to hold and use, even if the quality of construction does make it flex somewhat. Ports are mostly along either side, other than a MicroSD card slot on the front edge. The rear edge is exclusively allocated to an exhaust vent, and the underside has extensive vent holes for bringing air in to be expelled rearwards. One curiosity is the screen hinges that tease that they might be fully reversible but aren’t. These hinges do allow the screen to fold flat, travelling 180 degrees from the close position to fully extended. Not sure what the value is in this much rotation, but it’s what it can do. Normally, placing the power button on the side would be odd since you can see if the light on it is lit. But after a while, it became second nature to hit that button even without seeing it. It is generally considered that the 10th and 11th generations weren’t a golden time for Intel and that the 12th and 13th products were clearly much better. But the Intel Core i5-1135G7 at the heart of this system isn’t junk, and it makes the P4 trundle along rather effectively.
