Pilgrimage has been enjoying a revival in recent years. And now the British Pilgrimage Trust (BPT), a charitable trust with a modern-day take on ancient wisdom, is promoting the art of pilgrimage on our shores. The trust runs open events throughout the year for first-time pilgrims to sample the old ways. The weekends, based on walking ten to 12 miles per day, are spiritual rather than religious journeys, and open to all faiths.

BY mid-afternoon, muscles aching and blisters forming, the conversation is less easy. Maybe the enormity of the distance to our shelter for the night is focusing our minds. A late-afternoon wild swim at Tellisford Weir helps raise our spirits, however, for the final leg: a five-mile yomp. The Avon Valley offers its bucolic countryside, buzzards soar overhead, and butterflies dance across the trail. Only suddenly coming upon the rotting carcass of a sheep in a wooded glade serves to also remind us of the destructive power of nature. Not long ago we talked about the pilgrim abroad. Perhaps, like many of us here, you’re a seeker at heart and long to be a pilgrim, but one thing is missing—the pilgrimage. It’s not the right season, you don’t have the money, you can’t take the time away. The truth is, though, we are all on journeys—journeys of faith, journeys in relationship, journeys of discovering what we love and who we really are. And when we bring the intention and awareness of the pilgrim to these journeys, our everyday lives are transformed. Like the ancient pilgrims, I had challenged myself, and to some extent endured, and I had come to realise that the gift of water was all around: it was up to me to step forward and drink. In the words of John Bunyan’s hymn, I had “made good my right to be a pilgrim”.The story starts where the previous one ended. Sara has gone to prison. Tom Wilcher, however, did not want her to go and, indeed, is prepared to wait for her to come out of prison and he will then marry her. He feels what she stole was only trivial and, indeed, she deserved the items, as he paid her badly. However, his heirs (his nieces and nephews), eager to protect their inheritance (Tom has never been married and has no children) pushed for the prosecution. Tom had spent most of his career managing the family estate. He had lived part of the time in their London property but that been badly burnt so he had now returned to the family estate in Devon, Tolbrook, where he is now living. He is under the care of his niece, Ann, daughter of his brother Edward, and his nephew, Robert, son of his sister, Lucy. Tom’s three siblings are all dead. Ann is a qualified doctor (Tom has heart problems) but he is not sure whether they are concerned with his health and well-being or are there to protect their inheritance. It is true: the first pilgrims were not Christian, as is generally thought - they were Jews – and their main object of pilgrimage was the Holy Temple. This was built by King Solomon in Jerusalem around 3,000 years ago and has always remained in Jewish souls even after it was first destroyed in around 586 BCE, rebuilt approximately 70 years later, and then destroyed once again by the Romans in 70 CE. At the same time it was given a new tune by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, who used a melody taken from the traditional song "Our Captain Cried All Hands" which he collected in the hamlet of Monk's Gate in West Sussex – hence the name of "Monks Gate" by which the melody is referred to in hymn books. For many, the first 33 days of this 49-day period is one of semi-mourning. And on the 33 rd day, known as 'Lag Be'Omer', people rejoice. They build bonfires, have their hair cut, get married and concentrate on the final 16 days which lead to the festival of Shavuot. This culminates in the giving of the Torah to all the Jewish people by G-d via Moses at Sinai. I've written about last year's festival here.
