About this deal

Our little factory is located in the Hardangerfjord in Norway from where we source our nordic ingredients. Other retailers, such as ICA Gruppen, have committed to only sourcing UTZ-certified cocoa (currently part of Rainforest Alliance) for its private label chocolate assortment. A wide range of supply chain actors in both Sweden and Denmark are also UTZ/Rainforest Alliance certified. Popular brands that hold UTZ/Rainforest Alliance certification in the region include Cloetta and Cornetto. I would like to find some Nero Candy Bars. I bought some when I was in Oslo in 2005 and loved them. Love the name too🥰. Does anyone carry them in the USA? The European Union’s total chocolate production reached an estimated 3.7 million tonnes in 2019. Denmark produced 21 thousand tonnes of chocolate products in 2019, accounting for only 0.6% market share. The largest chocolate producing EU countries in volume were Germany and Italy, with 1,159 thousand tonnes and 553 thousand tonnes respectively. The chocolate production volumes of Sweden and Norway are not published.

Beat the eggs and sugar until stiff. Whisk the heavy cream until fully whipped and mix it into the egg mixture. Add cultured milk or kefir. Sift in the corn salt, baking soda, cardamom and most of the flour. Add the butter and stir everything together into a dough. Leave dough in the fridge until the next day. On my recent trip to Svalbard, I stumbled upon Fruene cafe which did a roaring trade in its homemade chocolate. I did my bit for the cause and tested out a couple. My favourite? The creamy white chocolate bar complete with polar bear print! At Kvarstad in Ringsaker, close to the E6 motorway, you'll find Kvarstad Sjokolade – a family business offering freshly made confectionery. Kvarstad also has a cosy farm café with local treats on the menu. Cocoa bean imports by both Norway and Sweden increased at an average annual rate of around 17% between 2016 and 2020. In 2020, 60% of Swedish imports came from Denmark. Although Norwegian imports are very small at only 13 tonnes, it is interesting to note that 85% of it is sourced directly from origin, mainly Peru. Growth in the bean-to-bar market and the growing consumer demand for traceability and storytelling may lead to further increases in direct imports by Scandinavian buyers from a wider range of origins in the long term.Malaco Skippers Pipes are a type of licorice candy that is popular among children. The candy is soft and chewy and comes in the shape of a pipe. Skipper’s Pipes were first introduced in 1920, and since then, they have been a favorite among kids. The candy is made with natural ingredients and does not contain any artificial colors or flavors. I'm told some people nibble away the chocolate and other layers leaving the jelly to the end. Now while I used to do the same with Jaffa Cakes, I can't imagine doing that with Troika. I'd love to know if any of you do!

These salty-sweet tornadoes are my absolute favourite Norwegian chocolate! Smash from Nidar are simply corn chips covered in chocolate. Small, local factories making handmade chocolates, and pastry shops offering chocolate pralines, are taking Norwegian chocolate to a new level. Who doesn't want to taste sweets presented like beautiful works of art?

The history of an icon

My training is purely from France, so the focus is very much on French technique. But I get a lot of inspiration from Norwegian culture, and I try to use as many local ingredients as possible in my products," says pastry chef Craig Alibone. Criollo is mainly grown in Central America, northern South America, the Caribbean and Sri Lanka. Criollo makes up approximately 5% of the global cocoa production. These beans have a delicate and sweet flavour. Criollo is often mixed with other varieties when making chocolate, given that it is scarce and expensive. Fine flavour cocoa beans are produced from Criollo cocoa trees. Well-known varieties are Chuao, Porcelana and Ocumare. Visitors can book a tour of the boathouse production facility and try their hand at the process, as well as sample some amazing chocolates. Did you know that you can buy most of these online? I’ve posted links below so keep on reading, and enjoy that Norwegian chocolate! As the name would suggest, you’ll need good quality butter for this, since it’s the star of the show. There can’t be any substitutes or alterations, I’m afraid. This kind of spice cookie can be found all around Scandinavia and the Baltics, and it’s often served plain, with no frosting at all.

These days, Stratos is best known for its commercials featuring the bright blue happy cow you can see on the wrapper. Just look at those udders go… Nestle, maker of KitKat, has argued in European courts since 2002 that it has the right to trademark the shape. The courts disagreed as KitKat isn't commonplace cross the continent. Freia couldn't buy that kind of publicity. The Scandinavian market is generally geared towards high-quality products. This is mainly the result of a combination of high purchasing power and high living standards in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In Norway, consumers indicated to be willing to pay more for quality goods. In Denmark, consumers seem to be more price-sensitive, as they are mainly looking for high-quality yet affordable products. I like to sprinkle mine with some sugar and slices almonds so that they bake into the dough and create a crispy top. My girlfriend has family in Hamarøy, and they have a huge property with lots of berries and fruits. Every summer we're there foraging, and use what we find, like cloudberries and blueberries, in our pastries and chocolate," says Craig, adding that he's a big fan of using ingredients in season.

There has also a peanut version round and about called ‘Peanøtt Kubbe' although I haven't seen it for a while. The peanut taste is much more overpowering than the rice of the original. However, I'm not sure whether that's because that's the genuine taste, or because I really don't like peanuts very much! Troika Craig has been taught by some of the world's greatest pastry chefs, including Bruno Montcoudiol, Sébastien Serveau, and Jean-Marc Guillot, at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie in Yssingeaux, France. Currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, Kvikk Lunsj marketing campaigns have developed over the years. However, the basic concept of the connecting with Norway's outdoors lifestyle has stayed central. The dough is made much like gingerbread, so you’ll need to warm through your butter and syrup until it’s melted and incorporated.

Sweden has the largest organic retail market in Scandinavia with €2.1 billion in 2019, making up approximately 9% of all retail sales. In Denmark, the share of organic retail sales was even higher with 12% in 2019, when total organic retail sales reached €2 billion, marking a growth of 9.4% compared to the previous year. The Norwegian organic market is a lot smaller, with organic retail sales amounting to €441 million in 2019, and only 1% of total retail sales estimated to be organic. Organic food consumption in Norway increased by 8% in 2019. Love Norwegian Chocolate! But how could you not mention Diams? I’ve been hooked since I first tasted them over 40 years ago. I get Freia Chocolate at Cost Plus World Markets or Ikea. Reply In 1980 the company merged with a Bergen-based company to create ‘Beregene Nidar' but 17 years later, the Nidar name was restored and all Bergen production moved to the Trondheim facility. Today the company is part of the giant Orkla corporation. Large chocolate bars
