Once you have added all of the decorations and felt features, cut around both robin outlines carefully. Then, place the two layers together and seam the edge using a blanket stitch or a whip stitch. Make sure to add stuffing to the centre of the Christmas decoration and ribbon to the top, before you complete the seam. In this post, I’ll explain the basics of needle felting and how I made my needle felted robin step by step. Here we go! What is needle felting? Next, take time to decorate the robin. Use the other templates provided to cut a wing from a different brown felt or fabric, a beak from orange felt, and a red breast from red fabric or felt. Before attaching them to the robin body, you could take time to add decorative stitches or other decorations. Then, position the wings, beak and breast in the correct position on the robin and use running stitch to attach them. Now it’s time to add in 2 wings – for the wings, I formed the shapes away from the Robin in my hands and then added them onto the Robin and felted them in place. Guess what I got for Christmas? A stash of wool roving and a felting needle! Whilst wool roving might not be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to a Christmas present, it was definitely mine! Needle felting has been on my list of crafts to try for several years now and so making this little fella with some of the supplies I received was a lot of fun.

I’m really happy with the finished result, especially since this is my first attempt at needle felting. And I have to say that needle felting is a very therapeutic hobby, just stabbing fabric over and over again until it finally morphs into the shape that you want!

Unlike the American Robin, the British Robin is a colourful little bird who is a mainstay in our garden, fields, and towns throughout the year – they stake their territory and can be quite vicious to other robins that venture into the area. Roll parts quite tightly before beginning to felt – trust me, this will greatly reduce your felting time Your project will, generally, not resemble anything close to what you are trying to make until at least 3/4 of the way through when you will hit the “how on earth is this ever going to look like that” wall, which you must punch your way through with steely determination. It all comes together near the end and everyone, experienced or a complete beginner, feels exactly the same way.’ The first thing I did to make my needle felted robin was to create the main body and head shape that I could felt around. Rather than waste my wool roving for this, I simply created two little balls of wall in different sizes, from a ball of spun yarn. See pics above. Step 2

Place on the head in a Toupee kind of effect and then felt into place stabbing with the needle – remember to pull out the same direction that you went in.
