About this deal

His career has spanned from the last days of the old newspaper era to the instant news of social media. It is perfect timing that The Road Dance, which is embedded in the island’s history and culture – and shot entirely on location – should be released in Scotland’s Year of Stories. The seeds of faith sown in a foreign land in a different millennium had no deeper, stronger root than here, here where the soil was thin but the soul was fertile. They may have had to leave to find work, to make a life for themselves, but that they had surely done.

The Road Dance (Hebrides): MacKay, John: 9781910021934

Even the pious older woman of the village shows a level of support following a rape, saying the constable has a choice in the investigation, while the girl who was raped did not. Based on the best-selling novel by John MacKay, The Road Dance is a period drama set in the picturesque but bleak Outer Hebrides in the early twentieth century.

Born and raised in Glasgow, MacKay attended the University of Glasgow, where he was an editor for the Glasgow University Guardian. I’m looking forward to seeing how the film is done, and what it leaves out (hopefully not much, as it’s a short book). It’s a difficult watch, mostly because the film skips from grey and dour, to heart-wrenchingly desolate.

Inspired by a true story, The Road Dance follows a tragedy which befalls a woman and her newborn baby, set amid the outbreak of WWI. It’s set in 1916 in a crofting community on Lewis, where village beauty Kirsty (Hermione Corfield) wants more from life than planting potatoes.Sorbier Productions, a Glasgow-based production company, is seeking funding to produce a film adaptation of The Road Dance. In 2015, he published "Notes of a Newsman", written about MacKay's journey as a news journalist and his news coverage of the Lockerbie bombing, the opening of the Scottish Parliament and the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum. It is a real eye opener into life in small island communities a little over a hundred years ago, the main storyline is shocking but also the impact that the war had on these communities. A heartbreaking, well told story on "the edge of the earth" during a different era in the beautiful, harsh Hebrides.
