About this deal

Your baby may be suffering from diarrhoea if their poo is very watery and they’re passing bigger amounts of poo more often than normal. The number of bowel movements a baby does each day can vary a lot, depending on their age and whether they are breast or formula fed.

Baby girls may pass some white discharge from their vagina which is often tinged with blood. This is normal and is caused by hormonal changes. There are also conditions such as Hirschsprung’s disease and Spina Bifida which affect a small number of children from birth. Our Guide for Children with Complex Bladder and Bowel Problems is something you can read with your child.

Constipation affects 1 in 3 children. It is particularly common in children under 5 years old. The majority of these children have what is known as ‘functional constipation’. This means there is no underlying physical cause or other medical condition. We have 3 try sessions a day: morning, lunch (trained TA does this) and after tea. She is richly rewarded for any poo that comes out. Basically I think her body is now used to evacuating at one of those times and the learned reflexes that held poo in are now learning a new controlled habit that prevents soiling. Constipation is quite common in formula fed babies. If your baby is struggling to poo, changing their formula may help, but this should only be done after talking it through with your GP or Health Visitor.

This can make it hard for a baby to relax their bottom muscles and let poo out the next time they feel it coming. This is known as withholding and makes constipation worse. She was very reluctant at first and it's taken a good 6 months (which I understand is good going!) to get her down to less than one accident a week. Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of ATL, said:”It is worrying that such a high number of support staff have received no training in dealing with such issues, yet they are expected to deal with pupils, and even though it is not formally within their job description. The bowel is a long tube-like organ which is part of our digestive system. This system begins when we put food into our mouths. Chewing food into little pieces makes it easier to swallow.Hotjar sets this cookie to identify a new user’s first session. It stores a true/false value, indicating whether it was the first time Hotjar saw this user. The colour, consistency and frequency of your baby’s poo can tell you a lot about their general health and development. The style and content of 'Poo Goes Home to Pooland' was designed to suit the cognitive development stage of children up to around seven years of age. Individual illustrations and accompanying text are intended to promote understanding of toileting mattersand to relieve anxiety. They cover topics such as sharing unhappy feelings and how to recognise when you need a poo. Your doctor may decide to prescribe a laxative to help your baby poo. Laxatives are safe to use in babies and small children and are licensed for them. Breast milk is designed to be easily digested so there might not be much waste. As long as your baby is growing well, gaining weight and their poo is soft, you don’t need to worry. How often should a formula fed baby poo?
