I highly recommend this walk to both Londoners and visitors to London alike. There is a wealth of history in the City of London much of which is, as the name of the walk suggests, hidden! Shaughn was the perfect guide. His enthusiasm, humour and knowledge made for fun and interesting morning. I thoroughly enjoyed this walk! Dalston Eastern Curve Garden– built on an old railway line, it’s an unexpected place to find trailing vines and beautiful flower beds. Its caring community host amazing events here too.

We had a really lovely time. Sean (is that how you spell it?) was brilliant. Very knowledgeable and entertaining and a great voice for a large group. We did this walk on 22nd August with Shaughan, who is a master of his craft. So much information conveyed with enthusiasm and humour, thoroughly entertaining. 2 hours just whizzed by. We recommend London Walks to friends whenever we know they are heading to London. Keep up the good work! Postman’s Park–this pretty garden to the north of St Paul’s Cathedral is a lovely place to press pause on your day. Its moving Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice is a must-see. Each tile on that wall is devoted to unsung heroes from the Victorian era onwards who died trying to save another. If you want to know London better, if you want to learn some things about the world’s most cosmopolitan city that most people who spend their lives there never learn… I can think of no better investment than London Walks” The New York Times Excellent “Hidden tour” with Simon today (25th August). An incredible amount of fascinating information conveyed in an humorous and entertaining manner. Would highly recommend.Amazing tour with a charismatic guide (Simon). Makes you appreciate the little details in the city which truly make it so rich and captivating. Recommend for anyone. It’s all very well and good extolling the virtues of exploring the unexplored places in London but who has the time to do all that research? To weed through the copious amounts of chaff to find the stuff that’s really worth doing? I hope you enjoy these self-guided London walking tours as much as I have, and that you get a chance to explore all the city’s secret spaces. Happy walking! Simon was an excellent tour guide. He’s clearly an expert in the material he presents and is very enthusiastic about communicating it in an entertaining way. If I were to go to London again, I’d certainly search out other tours he might be leading since it was an thoroughly enjoyable two hour experience.

London is a city that pays dividends – if you take the time to invest in it that is. There are so many hidden gems in London that if we’re frank, if you’re not taking the time to explore the city, you are not doing it justice. Queen Elizabeth Roof Garden – in warmer months, this verdant oasis on top of the Southbank Centre is open daily. It’s looked after by an admirable team affected by addiction and homelessness. By 18th Century standards that meant fluted columns reminiscent of the reason of Ancient Athens (or would it be the might of Imperial Rome?) and a ceiling that evokes the Sistine Chapel: Far above you on that high ceiling is an enormous mural painted by Sir James Thornhill that depicts heroic fragments of English history, kings, battles, inventions. Once you’re finished in the museums proper, take some time to mooch around the 16 acres of gardens.On the cusp of Farringdon and Holborn, the pub just so happens to be one of London’s historic drinking holes– there’s been a pub on these grounds since 1546 at least. This secret London walk will lead you through Greenwich and show you heritage buildings, picture-pretty side streets, and one of the best views of London.With the exception of Nunhead Cemetery, so far I’ve steered away from the city’s more macabre spots, but Cross Bones Burial Ground is one of the secret places in London that truly fascinates us. Next on my list of secret London walks is one in Islington. This local area in north London has bustling shopping streets, peaceful canals, and lots of colorful doors to take in. Though the likelihood of you accidentally stumbling across this pub are about 0.00001% it’s the fact that it’s so well hidden that makes it one of London’s best kept secrets. St Dunstan in the East– this Wren church was devastated by World War II bombings and its ruins are now draped in entangled vines and branches. It makes a striking picture. Working lunch spots Mayfair might feel like an unlikely place to discover London’s secrets. After all, anyone who has ever heard of The Ritz and Green Park knows that Mayfair’s all about the old-school spenny glamour.
