About this deal

Suspense - beautiful prose with compelling characters ( Frances as the unreliable narrator), with depth so layered and complex - that I found it awe-inspiring. Bitter Orange - Penguin Books UK

From the author of Our Endless Numbered Days and Swimming Lessons, Bitter Orange is a seductive psychological portrait, a keyhole into the dangers of longing and how far a woman might go to escape her past. Lyntons, the crumbling old manor house, is itself an enigmatic character. Previously requisitioned by the army during the world war, it has seen better days. Its fireplaces have been ripped out; books lay mouldy in the library; there are holes in the walls and floorboards; dead birds appear in the attic; pipes rattle at night; a poltergeist lurks within its walls like an unseen guest. It messes with the frail mental states of poor Fran and Cara. Spacious, yet spooky, sinister, and strangely claustrophobic. I would have run for my life.An extract (from 2019, so edited for final publication) from the start of the novel for the reader of the review to decide for themselves if the style appeals: Hess AM, Sullivan DL (March 2005). the sweet orange ( Citrus × aurantium Sweet Orange Group, other names: Citrus × aurantium var. sinensis, Citrus sinensis) In this story, Frances is a kind of sounding board for both Cara, who is a wild and free Irish girl, and Peter, who is older than Cara and closer in age to Frances. They welcome her to the “home”, show her to her room in the attic, and she tries to settle in. This was a disappointing read…there are some novels that one is perplexed throughout until nearly the end and then things are revealed where preceding events in the novel make sense. To me, this was not such a novel. Many varieties of bitter orange are used for their essential oil, and are found in perfume, used as a flavoring or as a solvent, and also for consumption. The Seville orange variety is used in the production of marmalade and also used to make French bigarade. [10]I enjoyed this book immensely, became lost in the characters story, never knowing quite what was going on, who was telling the truth, and what was being hidden. A key theme is obsession and even though right in the beginning we know how one character ends up, we don't know why, we do know these type of stories seldom end well. It seems, unless I missed something, that a few threads remained unanswered. Surprisingly, that didn't at all dim my appreciation for this wonderful work.

Turgeon, Charlotte Snyder. The new Larousse gastronomique: the encyclopedia of food, wine & cookery. In Greece and Cyprus, the nerántzi or κιτρομηλο, respectively, is one of the most prized fruits used for spoon sweets, and the C. aurantium tree ( nerantziá or kitromiliá) is a popular ornamental tree. In Albania as well, nerënxa or portokalli i hidhur is used commonly in spoon sweets. the non-linear, rather repetitive, style of the stories stretched the novel beyond my patience (224 is simply too long for my taste); Thank you to Tin House books and Edelweiss for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions in this book are my own.

In 2019, Omani author Jokha Alharthi won the International Booker Prize for “Celestial Bodies.” Her multifaceted generational story, translated from the Arabic by Marilyn Booth, offered English readers a rare look at Omani literature, particularly Omani fiction by a woman. Indeed, amid the surge of international attention generated by the U.K. award, Alharthi noted, “People were surprised by the book, and some even said they had no idea a country named Oman existed.”
