This book explains our brains have 3 systems for survival. Self protection and threat (fears) , Incentives and resources (pleasures) and being content. We need to keep fears and pleasures balanced to feel content. Gilbert, P. (1984). Depression: From Psychology to Brain State. London: Lawrence Erlbaum AssociatesA lot of the science in the book was something I found quite interesting. For example the fact that aside from the threat and excitement system, animals also have a soothing/contentment system which basically means they don't worry when there is nothing to specifically worry about. Humans spend little time in this zone because we are wired to think about threat all the time - much more so than anything pleasurable. Learning about this helped me feel less frustrated about myself and more normal when I'm being a 'worrywart'. Eradicating bad feelings can never be the end goal as they are part of our basic make-up and serve a purpose, but we can be kinder to ourselves about feeling them. Since it's inception in 2006, members of the Compassionate Mind Foundation have been developing trainings for Compassion Focused Therapy which are accessible, rigorous, and in sync with the latest research findings. Our training committee are all experienced practitioners and researchers, dedicated to the promotion of high quality trainings, with several years experience of teaching CFT. There are currently two main steps on our training pathway, which offer a sound overview to the CFT model. These are complimented by other trainings which demonstrate the application of CFT to particular areas or client groups. I completed it only because I have a particular interest in compassion and am doing research on this topic at the moment. I did not really find it very useful as an academic book even though it has lots of references and I know from reading other writers on this topic that it is very well researched and accurate, to the best of my knowledge.
