About this deal

So the name, “Dutch Courage,” is attributed to a possibly apocryphal story about the origin of gin in England. Supposedly when the English were fighting alongside the Dutch in the 20 years war, the Dutch took a swig of a spirit before rushing into battle. This spirit made them bold! Made them powerful! Made them courageous. Hence the name “Dutch Courage.” The stuff they were drinking? Genever. The ancestral spirit which led to the development of gin. And ostensibly— Zuidam Dutch Courage. Once the flavor has properly bonded, the 8 components are then re-distilled separately in a Pot Still, to highlight the characteristics of the botanical infusion.

There is a distinction between oude jenever (old gin) and jonge jenever (young gin). Oude jenever is produced in a much older procedure (before 1900). Jonge jenever was developed during WW II, when the ingredients needed for jenever were in short supply. Instead, molasses and sugar beet were used. The different procedures and ingredients give old jenever a softer and sweeter flavour. It’s more yellow of color and often a higher percentage of alcohol. In modern times, jenever distilled from grain and malt only is labelled Graanjenever. Jonge jenever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre. Oude jenever must contain at least 15% malt wine, but no more than 20 g of sugar per litre. Korenwijn (grain wine) is a drink very similar to the 18th-century-style jenever, and is often matured for a few years in an oak cask; it contains from 51% to 70% malt wine and up to 20 g/L of sugar. Although the name oude jenever does not necessarily mean that the jenever is in fact old, there are some distilleries that age their jenever in oak barrels. As a clear grain-based distillate, junge jenever is particularly low in energy with a single shot containing fewer than 100 calories. However, oude jenever will likely be more. In either case, carbs are essentially absent, though. Blaine SK, Milivojevic V, Fox H, Sinha R. Alcohol effects on stress pathways: impact on craving and relapse risk. Can J Psychiatry. 2016;61(3):145-153. doi:10.1177/0706743716632512 Furthermore, juniper has anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. Therefore, jenever can be used to help with coughs and sore throats, especially when used in combination with other herbs. For instance, ginger can be an excellent addition when using jenever as a remedy. We’ve already covered some of the health benefits of gin in its own dedicated guide, which are actually the same due to the similar production process. This mostly consists of juniper’s unique properties given that it’s a natural antioxidant.

Made by historic London wine merchants Berry Bros. & Rudd, the six-botanical spirit took two years to develop with Dr David Clutton – a man who holds a PhD in gin (yep, that exists). It was worth the effort. Estruch R, Sacanella E, Badia E, et al. Different effects of red wine and gin consumption on inflammatory biomarkers of atherosclerosis: a prospective randomized crossover trial. Effects of wine on inflammatory markers. Atherosclerosis. 2004;175(1):117-23. doi:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2004.03.006 Meanwhile, oude jenever is often appreciated like whisky where it is served at room temperature in a copita nosing glass. Dutch-based Lucas Bols produces and sells oude genever, known as ginebra in Spanish, in South America. Ketel One is now more known for producing vodka, but started out as, and still is, a jenever distillery. As Dutch gin enjoys a revival among spirits enthusiasts and mixologists worldwide, it remains a symbol of the Dutch spirit of innovation, craftsmanship, and cultural pride. With every sip of jenever, one is not just enjoying a drink but partaking in a centuries-old tradition that has shaped the landscape of spirits and continues to evolve and inspire. Whether one is sipping on a classic oude jenever or exploring the nuances of a craft jonge expression, Dutch gin offers a complexity and richness that is as enduring as the Dutch spirit itself.

Jenever cities [ edit ] Bottles of jenever for sale in Hasselt, including two in traditional clay bottles Malted Barley (Dutch: Gemoute Gerst): Malted barley is necessary as it contains the enzymes which are critical to the fermentation process of Rye and Corn starch. The origin of jenever (also spelled genever) is the subject of much debate, but it’s believed the spirit – originally a combination of distilled malt wine and juniper berries – was originally developed for medicinal use in the 16th century somewhere in the Netherlands, where it remains the country’s national drink.
