About this deal

Before purchasing a mosquito dunk, be sure to read the label and do some research to make sure it doesn’t contain any potentially toxic chemicals. But when you read about them on the internet, you often receive a barrage of jargon without any explanation as to what they truly are and what they accomplish. This may lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Question: What do you recommend we do with the water that now has dead larvae, Bti, and old straw or hay in it? Can the spent dunk and straw/hay be composted?

It can be added to standing water or containers that cannot be emptied out, covered, or turned over every week. Those containers could be rain barrels, fountains, ornamental ponds and pools that are not in use. Mosquito (Culex) larvae in standing water, Atlanta, Georgia, 2003. Other DIY traps use a fan and netting to catch mosquitoes. “But they don’t catch many, and they also catch a large proportion of non-target moths and other night-flying insects,” says Michael Skvarla, Ph.D., assistant research professor of arthropod identification at Penn State University. The bottom line: DIY traps may catch a few mosquitoes, but they’re not proven to reduce the overall population. Commercial mosquito traps aren’t effective. Neem oil is sold in the UK in various forms from skin creams, ready-to-use garden sprayers to pure compounds that you’ll need to dilute yourself. If these products have not been melted down, they can be dangerous when consumed by pets. The Bti can cause cats and dogs sever stomachaches and nausea. So if it’s been eaten, you should go to a vet right away.

Save time and money on pest control

The CDC provides advice on mosquito control at home here and information on the mosquito lifecycle here. I can confirm that Doogie, our resident dog, didn’t behave differently when the devices were switched on. In more ways than one, mosquito dunks are the perfect type of pesticide. Its main component, BTI, is naturally found in soil. Many city municipalities use BTI as an effective way to control mosquitoes.

So, these items do look like a treat or a cookie to a child or a dog. And, because mosquito dunks are designed to dissolve slowly and float through the water, inquiring minds might get a bit curious. I would never recommend that mosquito dunks are safe for ingestion. Allow it to fully dissolve in the water before removing them from heat. The larvae will have begun to die by then.

The secret is using mosquito dunks, which are small tablets that dissolve in water and kill mosquitos before they hatch. The EPA said it is important to follow the label to make sure the Bti product is being used correctly. There are several products that can be used on certain drinking water while others are not intended for drinking water use.
