The tape matrix available here on our datasheet will help you to choose the correct product for your application. Vapour Control Layers Novia Vapour Control Layers (VCL) products are sealed using one of our double-sided butyl tapes, generally using an overlap of 75mm to 100mm, but with certain products we do state that a larger overlap is required. A lap-seal is then applied on top using one of the metallised BOPP tape or standard aluminium foil tapes. The wider the tape used, then the stronger the seal will be, so choose a tape based on your own particular application and budget. Breathable membranes for walls tend to be of a generally lower specification than those used within roofs due to the nature of the application. Normally a roof breather would also be suitable as a high specification wall breather, but a wall breather would almost certainly not be suitable for use in a roof.

width is perfect for sealing valleys, eaves and ridges on roofs with external wood fibre insulation; 75mm on each surface provides the optimum strength and durability at these critical junctions. It is also useful for sealing up the holes through which fibrous insulation was blown into walls and roofs. 150mm is also handy for creating patches to repair accidental punctures or tears in membranes that can occur during construction. Tescon Vana is a robust airtight adhesive tape for creating permanent airtight seals on membranes and airtight accessories.

Self-adhesive timesaving membranes

Novia FR Breather Membraneis fire rated to class B-s1,d0 andis suitable to use in constructions over 18m in height according to building regulations in the UK. The 60mm width is ideal for sealing overlaps and connections with the recommended 25-30mm of tape on each surface.

Novia supplies a range of double-sided butyl, single-sided foil, single-sided non woven and double-sided adhesive tapes for use with our membrane range. To ensure good adhesion on wood fibre insulation boards (e.g. Gutex), concrete, plaster or smooth masonry, Tescon Primer RP or Tescon Sprimer should be used first to stabilise the surface. On surfaces that are painted or may come away, detach or delaminate, we recommend doing an adhesion test first. This overlap tape is 38mm wide, so there’s less chance that the joint can be contaminated from dust or soot, giving a more secure seal. Compared to one-tape overlap seals this overlapping tape gives a better seal and can even be applied in temperatures from -30C to +80C.Due to the nature of the application practically any type of tape may be suitable, but we would advise the use of our foil or double-sided butyl versions on the grounds of cost. Tescon Vana creates an airtight seal that lasts 100 years. This has been independently tested and proven, by Kassel University, using accelerated aging techniques. Only Pro Clima have achieved this level of durability for airtight tapes. It is also Passivhaus certified as part of the Intello Plus system attaining the best results ever recorded. Novia Gas Barriers are sealed with 50mm double-sided butyl tape, using an overlap of at least 150mm. A final top lap seal is then applied using the metallised BOPP tape or 100mm foil tape. Using both 50mm butyl tape and the metallised BOPP tape is vital when installing the Novia Methane Pro DPM - please see the full product datasheet for full information. Novia Breather Membranes should be installed with a minimum of the Breather Membrane Lap tape. This is a high adhesive tape made from non woven material, similar to the breather membranes. In some cases, the breather membrane lap tape is mandatory. Please see the individual breather membrane datasheet to ensure compatibility. This adhesive tape is integrated into Easy-Trim’s breather membrane range to create an airtight and rainproof seal over laps. The hot-melt-based, pressure sensitive breather membrane tape can speed up the installation process as you simply place the underlay into position, remove both lines from top and bottom, ensure it’s positioned correctly and then join overlaps. Press the overlaps to confirm a good and tight seal.
