About this deal

Her host for the duration of her visit is Paul, her father’s assistant. As Paul leads Rose through Japan, her resentfulness towards her father begins to soften, as she examines her own life and tendencies, reflecting on her upbringing and her father’s legacy. This lushly written novella length story profiles the reexamination of Rose’s distant and estranged relationship with her father, who has recently passed away. Rose travels to Japan, planning to stay only long enough to discover the contents of her father’s will.

Best of all for me was Rose’s character herself. She said she came from a monomaniacal family; her mother was all sadnesses. She was all anger.Atmosphere is played up -- to the hilt -- from Haru's home to the tea-houses and, of course, Kyōto's famous temples -- but also includes, for example, the incongruous and rough modernity of much of contemporary Kyōto. Still, it's that quality that helps sustain the story, the fact that for decades dreary Rose basically simply turned inwards -- and found only emptiness there. If Rose and her past start off as bleaker than what would pass muster in your average Lifetime or Hallmark made-for-TV-movie, Barbery ultimately finds her way to a conclusion that's entirely true to that genre.

Lots of Sake and beer… She never met the man whom her mother had left before her birth (and, of course, now it is too late).

Single red rose shows your long love and devotion. Red rose is kind of the stronger representation of deep love. Single white rose tells you the purity and the peace of love. It is also an innocent yet impeccable feeling. On the other hand, white rose also represents innocent childhood of a girl. Barbery prefaces each chapter with a folk story/fable that is reflected in some aspect of the narrative that follows it. There is a surfeit of symbolism, often presented in virtually impenetrable passages which might appeal to the more cerebral reader. Or perhaps this is a product of the translation. The copious use of flowery imagery together with Barbery’s failure to show rather than tell will leave many readers disappointed. Not Barbery’s best work. The reading doesn’t happen right away. Rose is put up in Haru’s home, waited on by his longtime housekeeper and driver, and taken out daily by his friend and assistant, Paul. Paul is a Belgian national, but a longtime resident of Japan, a widower with a 10-year-old daughter. Can you tell where this is going? Well, you’re right, but we go a lot of other places before that.

Single Rose – beauty in simplicity

There is something doggedly hopeful in Rose’s ambivalence, something committed to growing while also honoring perpetual sadness. We learn, “At the age of forty, Rose has not really lived.” Growing up in the French countryside, she “received the intelligence of the world.” Also, “She read novels, and in this way, through pathways and stories, her soul was crafted . . . until one day, as if losing a handkerchief, she lost her predisposition for happiness.”

She embarks on a tour of Kyoto’s Zen gardens pre-choreographed by her father, chauffeured by his personal driver, and guided by his chief of staff, a Belgian art dealer named Paul who will become central to the story. In the days leading to the mysterious reading of the will, so begins Rose’s interior transformation. “She observed the tatami mats, the paper panels, the window opening onto branches in the sun, the crumpled peony; finally, she observed herself, as if she were a stranger she had met only the day before.” A Single Rose by Muriel Barbery, Alison Anderson (Translation) is a 2021 Europa Editions publication. It is true if rose is the most popular flower between all types of flower. You can send a single rose or even a dozen of it. Still, it shows how deep your feeling is to the person who receives the rose. When someone gives you a single peach rose, it represents a great friendship or you are the best friend. It can be given to both friend and lover after all. A single purple rose is simply describing the beauty. It is really effective to tell a person if there is a huge beauty in that person by giving a purple rose.
