About this deal

Question: What are your favorite YA contemporaries to reread? I'm in desperate need for recommendations. The only reason Along for the Ride didn't receive the full five stars is because I felt there was something missing: there wasn't the extra punch Dessen usually delivers in her books. I just wanted to make it clear that it's not because of how formulaic some find her books to be. I simply space out the time between her novels, so I don't feel like I'm reading the same story over and over. I'm not sure why it's so awful Auden's mom came to town with the hot grad student. Or at all. Mothers are allowed to have sex lives. It's generally how they became mothers.

The friend group of the main characters in this book wasn’t that strong, but Auden’s stepmom Auden? I LOVED HER. She took a little while to grow on me and I would never have expected myself to like her type of character, but it was just so easy to root for her and want her to succeed. 100% one of my favourite Sarah Dessen side characters. I also liked Maggie, though! Both Auden and her mother — at the beginning of the story — hate the stepmother Heidi. Heidi is one of those girls who is optimistic, very girly, and enjoys pink. Basically all of those things make Auden’s mother want to hurl! Whether it’s jealousy or actual dislike of Heidi, Auden’s mother is never short of rude comments about her. Anyways, Auden stays with her father — a man who never took care of Auden or her brother as babies — and his new family. Her father is extremely obsessed with his work, moods completely depending on how it goes.

I have a whole lot more to say, but in short, Sarah Dessen books just hit different. Join me along this journey into the past.

unfortunately: still a boring-as-hell guy. still a boring-as-hell girl. but also female friendship! but also really terrible parents who maybe shouldn't have been redeemed? and also a whole lot about bikes, which is weird as hell. Auden's choice to stay with her dad, Robert and step-mom, Heidi, for the summer is met with derision by her mother, Victoria, a respected English professor. In the movie, Auden has already made this decision and is driving to Colby a few minutes after the opening credits. In the novel, it's a more drawn-out process, with Auden deciding to take Heidi up on her offer after spending a few lonely weeks at home. The night changed things, widening out the scope. What we said to each other, the things we did, they all took on a bigger meaning in the dark." Sands, Alexandria (April 22, 2021). "Netflix's 'Along for the Ride' seeking baby extras". SHE DOES SOMETHING UNCHARACTERISTIC OF HER THAT STARTS OR DEEPENS HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM -- like confess a secret, or kiss the boy, or take on a job -- something that exposes her for a moment

( January 2012) Now, ironically, given the book’s subject matter, I read this one during one of my insomnia episodes. In fact, it’s 7:52 a.m. as of writing this sentence, and I just had breakfast and sat down to write this review. I’ll be going to sleep soon as I finish it, quite satisfied at that, because this book turned an otherwise destined to be useless night, exciting, interesting, and memorable. (Which is more than I can say about all the others, considering I can’t even distinguish one from another…) I liveblogged reading this for a friend, so instead of writing up AGAIN why this book made me so furious and frustrated, I'll just copy and paste for you: I hate being expected to remember people from all other Sarah Dessen books. Here's news: I DO NOT. I feel like I'm reading fanfiction for a series I never watched. I hate this self-referential bullshit. While Auden works she's treated kindly by the other girls. After a few day, Auden's professor mother comes down to visit. She is highly critical of Heidi and the store for the stereotype of women it projects. Auden's mother notices that her daughter has changed and once Auden defends Heidi. The employees at Heidi's boutique encourage Auden to go to a party with them and there she has an encounter with Eli. They keep bumping into each other, and eventually find out that both of them have nocturnal habits. They start hanging out with each other when night time comes. They do things that Auden hasn't really done before, such as bowling. They start getting closer and eventually kiss for the first time at a bar. Auden asks Maggie if she can teach her how to ride a bike. Maggie agrees to help.It shouldn't be easy to be amazing. Then everything would be. It's the things you fight for and struggle with before earning that have the greatest worth. When something's difficult to come by, you'll do that much more to make sure it's even harder―or impossible―to lose.”
