We can see from this specs comparison that the latest Shinobi 7 adds not only screen real estate but a number of completely new features and benefits. Perhaps the overall biggest benefit for some production crews is the Cross Conversion HDMI <=> SDI with Down convert. This opens up new avenues in video monitor-only capabilities, with down conversion for SDI inputs. Full Frame Cameras Canon EOS-R Full Frame Cameras Nikon Z Full Frame Cameras Full Frame L Mount Cameras Sony Full Frame Cameras Canon EOS DSLR Full Frame Cameras Nikon DSLR Full Frame Cameras Vlogging Cameras Designed purely for monitoring purposes, Atomos Shinobi requires very low power in standby or monitoring modes. This translates to lasting endurance and ‘all day run times’ from a single battery. Lastly, it would have been nice if Atomos had supplied some of the vital peripherals, in particular batteries and cables. Coming from the higher end video market, it’s possible that Atomos assume that their customers will have these readily to hand, however, this product, and it’s sister, the Ninja is aimed at the hybrid, stills/video market and these customers often will not have the cables or batteries to hand.
Level up
Ninja can capture RAW HDMI inputs up to 6K at 30fps and simultaneously output a standard viewable video signal via HDMI for devices that don’t support RAW formats. The top of the report provides details on the monitor that has been measured and calibrated. In the case of the NEON, that also includes the Master Control Unit (MCU). The model of the measurement meter and it’s serial number are also recorded. These details are important for the comparison of results, since different meters have different profiles. The last field details the operating system used. The Shinobi is designed to fit your set-up. It feeds to the camera via an HDMI cable (not included) and has 1/4"-20 screw mounts on the top and bottom for ease of cage and adaptor rigging. The battery sits in the centre of the monitor for improved balance and manoeuvrability. Clearly we also get some improvements in video thanks to a new HDMI 2.0 port, namely 4K 60p IN and OUT. There’s also a huge leap in daylight viewing with NITS up from 1000 to 2200 over the 5-inch model. This is massive for outdoor filming or brighter environments. Whether you shoot vlogs, monitor a pro production or are simply using the screen to make better photographs, this will have a big real-world impact.
