Yet another great all-girl band pushing the musical narrative forward, Hotwax are going to be big. They have the songs that come armed with mighty choruses, they have the inventiveness to stake out their own sound and they are all brilliant players. Heading out the door? I’ve obviously tried working with different producers and know that my process is very different because I don’t turn up with something that’s finished. All of my collaborators go on a journey with me and don’t know where I’m going. I just know what I need, and when I’ve got enough material I’ll go away and do the alchemy. If you want to wear a special outfit that will show off your recently waxed areas, like arms or legs, then it is essential to avoid wearing perfume or creams that could irritate the skin and damage it. Remember that a wise beauty lover would not expose his or her skin to an agent that could produce redness, irritability and even unattractive infected pores.Paul Johnson: I don’t remember it that way, either! I remember Angie Bailey told Carol about us, and I remember talking to Carol afterwards, and…I was indifferent to whether it was a good show or not. I just remember doing the show, Carol was there, and…we had already started a local following, but I do have to attribute whatever regional or wherever success – if you want to call it that – to Carol’s hard work. I mean, she really did put us in the right places in front of the right people, and anything past our local following, I attribute it a lot to her input. Chemical resistant - Safe to use in a ski workshop with all the waxes and cleaners that are being used Sean Hennessy : Mike’s a great musician, and for me as a bass player to have him come in and comment on stuff and help with the sound, that was incredible. But, you know, at that point, we were in our late teens and early twenties, and…it felt normal and natural. I don’t think we were too overwhelmed by it. It was just kind of… cool . And Carol knew them, so it was like hanging out with some new friends. It worked out really well. And having him play on “Return” was kind of cool, with his Floyd Kramer style keyboard riffs in there. That was cool.

Heat the waxing iron to the appropriate temperature for the wax you’re working with. Make sure the iron is not smoking when you apply wax, as this indicates overheating. The only actual live playing I wasn’t present for was the wind and string instruments. I trust the people I’m working with and when I set up a session I tend to only use one microphone anyway, which takes me to a certain stage before I lose myself down a rabbit hole trying to get the right sounds and textures. Wax were a new wave duo based in Manchester, England, consisting of American singer-songwriter Andrew Gold and 10cc guitarist/bassist Graham Gouldman. They are best known for their European hit singles " Bridge to Your Heart" and " Right Between the Eyes". In the US, they were listed as Wax UK, while later releases were additionally credited as Andrew Gold & Graham Gouldman. Jamieson, Sarah (1 August 2023). "HotWax: "We just write what we want to play live" ". DIY . Retrieved 1 August 2023. Wax Lyrical recently played at our wedding. Everyone commented on how good they were and how much fun they had at our evening reception!I wanted to do something that was completely different, which was a massive challenge, so I went to town on that record to break away from Smokers Delight. The influence of touring and using live musicians totally opened things up for me because I could actually sample them.

The song "Love Tonight" is written by Andrew Gold, Graham Gouldman and Mike Botts. The album also includes "The King of Showbiz" that would later appear on Common Knowledge.com That happened in February this year when I had an operation for a suspected brain tumour. Building up to that, I’d already written a section of the album but was still waiting for all the pieces to fall together. The fact that HotWax have never really had a plan – only a lot of vim and dedication – has been written into their own folklore. At college, they bonded over a shared resentment for the hyper-critical nature of their classmates, many of whom had learned their instruments via a more traditional musical education. “You can’t be taught something that you know you want to do in your own way,” says Sayers. “There’s no way we could have followed their critiques and what they had to say about what we’re doing.” Wax recently played at our wedding reception and we couldn't fault them. They had a brilliant set list, really got the crowd dancing and a couple of our guests are now interested in hiring them for up-coming parties! What I feel I’ve learned now is that the creativity was always there from the beginning but without the acquired knowledge. When you acquire a certain amount of knowledge it has an effect on you, which can be good or bad. It’s no longer about having all these tools and needing to use them, you just need to remember why you love making music, be a kid again, have fun and just play.

I thought that upgrading everything would sound better, but for depth, transience, space and things staying where I put them, it’s been a game changer, although I’ve still got the UAD Apollo 8 for my DSP, plugins and stuff.” Step 2: Apply Wax Keep the wax moving on the iron and keep the iron moving as you drip wax onto the ski. ( Photo: Keri Bascetta) Unfurling their origin story in conversation with NME, HotWax are like live wires off stage too, exuding a frenzied blend of mild anxiety and excitement as they talk over each other. When we broach their upcoming slot at The Strokes’ All Point East show in London this August, all three members rush to speak in wide-eyed bursts. “We almost feel guilty for being on the lineup poster,” says Sayers, laughing. “But equally, we want to relish the challenge: we’re currently unknown, and need to prove ourselves.” Paul Johnson: I wouldn’t say Mike had a lot to do with the sound of the album, but he kind of had some creative input there, and he was a great presence. You know, we were amateurs in the studio. We were a live band that had done minimal recording, and R.E.M. had made – and so had Mitch – cool-sounding, successful records. He was a good guy to work with. He came up with some cool ideas. We sort of had an R.E.M.-ish sound on that record, obviously, but he said, “You know, you guys should try doing something with a harder sound.”What with the pandemic – the sense of everyone feeling trapped and being set free from my touring life – I found my family again, realised that I’d never really lived in my house and started to feel like the stuffI was writing were actually cries of freedom. When the health scare happened, it was another thing I wanted to be free of.” Dunworth, Liberty (31 May 2023). "Royal Blood announce new North American tour dates". NME . Retrieved 1 August 2023.
