About this deal

From smooth Barbie dolls to internet porn, girls and women grow up with a very narrow view of what they should look like, even though in reality there is an enormous range. Womanhood departs from the ‘ideal vagina’ and presents the gentle un-airbrushed truth, allowing us to understand and celebrate our diversity. Sensitive and compassionate, Manhood will surprise you and reassure you. It may even make you reconsider what you think you know about men, their bodies and masculinity. The loss of a breast, or a scar, the diagnosis, treatment and recovery will mean different things to different women – we are individual, complex, nuanced. I wanted to tell these women’s stories and share the brave, sad, painful, moving and sometimes even funny truth.

The same themes run through everything I do: my work is an exploration of people, our lives and our place in the world. I’m drawn to telling the untold story with integrity. women bravely share un-airbrushed photographs of their breasts alongside honest, courageous, powerful and humorous stories about their breasts and their lives. Women from all walks of life took part, aged from 19 to 101, sized AAA to K, from Buddhist nun to burlesque dancer. Their perspectives and experiences are revealing and profoundly moving. Intimate, visually refreshing, maybe even surprising, Bare Reality will make you reconsider how you think and feel about your own body, and those of the women in your life. These days we are all less bound by gender and traditional roles, but is there more confusion about what being a man means? From veteran to vicar, from porn addict to prostate cancer survivor, men from all walks of life share honest reflections about their bodies, sexuality, relationships, fatherhood, work and healthI became fascinated with the dichotomy between how breasts are presented for public consumption versus how we feel about them privately,” Laura told me. “I felt compelled to look past the cultural mirror which had so long encircled me. What do women think about growing up? What do women think about sex? How do women feel about motherhood? Breastfeeding? What is our experience of health, body image, ageing? It is clear to me that Bare Reality was a search to find out what it means to be a woman. My books Bare Reality: 100 women, their breasts, their stories, Manhood: The Bare Realityand Womanhood: The Bare Reality attracted worldwide media coverage and critical acclaim. I gave a TEDxtalk about the series. A Channel 4 documentary based on Womanhoodcalled 100 Vaginashas now been aired around the world. That led to being commissioned by The Guardian to direct another documentary, SCARS. I hope that Bare Reality can help transform other people. I would like it to help people reconsider how they think and feel about their bodies and those of the women in their lives,” said Laura Dodsworth, Author of Bare Reality.

Vagina, vulva, lady garden, pussy, beaver, cunt, fanny… whatever you call it most women have no idea what’s ‘down there’. Culturally and personally, no body part inspires love and hate, fear and lust, worship and desecration in the same way. For the first time, 100 brave and beautiful women reveal their bodies and stories on their own terms, talking about how they feel about pleasure, sex, pain, trauma, birth, motherhood, menstruation, menopause, gender, sexuality and simply being a woman. women bravely share un-airbrushed photographs of their breasts alongside honest, courageous, powerful and humorous stories about their breasts and their lives. Women from all walks of life took part, aged from 19 to 101, sized AAA to K, from Buddhist nun to burlesque dancer. Their perspectives and experiences are revealing and profoundly moving. Intimate, visually refreshing, maybe even surprising, Bare Reality will make you reconsider how you think and feel about your own body, and those…My recent focus on fear follows a trajectory of interest in the taboo and what makes us who we are. You might say I went from pillow talk to nightmares. You see, it all started with the Bare Realityseries…

Bare Reality has completely transformed me,” Laura went on. “I have always liked women, but now I feel so tender about the female experience, and I like myself more as a woman. I have photographed 100 women and I know there is no such thing as ‘perfection’— I like my breasts more. I hope that Bare Reality can help transform other people. I would like it to help people reconsider how they think and feel about their bodies and those of the women in their lives.” The work of Laura Dodsworth, a feminist, photographer, and author of Bare Reality , the book form and now exhibition, explores the dichotomy between women’s personal perception of her breasts and how they are represented in media. Of course I know — we all do — that all breasts are different. But it’s very rare to be faced with 100 topless women and given the opportunity to see exactly how different breasts can be. I can imagine my own breasts slotted into the grid. No better, no worse than any of the others. Just… different. From smooth Barbie dolls to internet porn, girls and women grow up with a very narrow view of what they should look like, even though in reality…

To take the transformative impact of Laura Dodsworth and Bare Reality further, for every book sold, a donation will be made to Breast Cancer UK . “This touching, inspirational book cuts through the sexual objectification of breasts and encapsulates how unique, yet similar, we all are.” – Breast Cancer UK
