About this deal

My preferred shop-bought ground feeders are these large wooden models. They don’t offer predator protection, but they are big enough for most birds to feed without spillage, big enough to catch food dropping from hanging feeders and very light and easy to move and clean. We currently have 4 of them in different places around the garden. The latest design of this guardian cage sanctuary has a wider base, to put more distance between your food and large birds like pigeons and doves. This makes this sanctuary even more effective at creating a safe area for small birds to feed in and excluding large birds from your RSPB ground table (sold separately). These Ground Bird Feeder cages are a generous size with an overall width of 56cm. This large coverage allows you to feed a large amount of feed beneath it and also allows plenty of room for trays to sit comfortable underneath as well.

Designed to provide a wide, stable feeding surface, all our ground bird feeder products feature built-in drainage to prevent your bird food getting waterlogged. We also have ground feeder cage designs to help protect and preserve the food you put out for your feathered garden visitors. To help protect your garden birds from predators and guard their food against pests such as squirrels and larger birds, we also supply a selection of guardians, which can be paired with your ground bird feeder. This is a particularly useful solution for pet owners, as well as for those who live in areas with a thriving squirrel population.Structure of this simple ground feeder is a metal square bar tied in with the rim of the metal mesh lining. Protect smaller birds from predators in this safe haven, designed to cover food on the ground for birds. So taking the time to set up a ground feeding station will add lots of enjoyment to your garden birdwatching and help support some of our best-loved native species. Love them or loathe them; pigeons and collared doves are probably the other leading group of ground feeders you may have in your garden. Before we look at how best to cater to the ground feeders, let’s look at why some birds prefer to feed in this way and which birds fall into this group. Why Do Some Birds Feed on The Ground?

Size1 - Narrow Mesh-measuring 35mm x 70mm, keeps out larger birds (as below) and will also keep out most squirrels and mature starlings. *Please also note that juvenile starlings may be able to squeeze through this mesh, so we cannot guarantee its effectiveness against young starlings. While hanging feeders are now the most popular bird feeding method in UK gardens, we have an array of alternative options available, some of which may even attract a greater variety of garden birds! One such product is the ground feeder, which comes in a range of designs and specifications to suit a broader selection of feeding aims. Its safe to say all ground bird feeders use a metal mesh tray with one wooden exception. Gardman: Compact Ground Feeder Tray Another kind of problematic visitors to your garden are cats. Unlike birds of prey, domestic cats are not natural predators anymore. They do not need to hunt to survive, and their habit of catching birds, particularly during the breeding season, can be a problem for all types of birds.Like pigeons, they are ground feeders and not built to eat clinging to tree trunks or hanging bird feeders. We also have a variety of decorative ground feeders for birds that are quite ornamental for undeniable garden charm or you can also choose simple trays that make it easy for the birds to come in and enjoy the food you offer them. Our selection of bird ground feeders are suitable for the full range of our bird food products and you can also mix the foods to give the birds more variety. A surprising number of our most popular garden birds prefer to feed on the ground. The Thrush Family The pitched roof allows for a coconut shell treat or small feeder (neither included) to be hung above a ground feeding table (such as the RSPB Ground-feeding table, not included). Whether you need a straightforward ground bird feeder cage or are looking for something a little more garden stylish, we have a wide choice of ground bird feeders to choose from.

The key is to choose a model where the feeding platform is not too high off the ground. Many of our smaller ground-feeding birds will be happy on a feeding platform that’s just 4 or 5 foot above ground level. So our Bath Universal Bird Table, for example, is a great option. Not so tall as to be daunting for the smaller ground feeders and open-sided to allow access for bigger birds. As you can see, the ground feeding birds are a large group and will add loads of interest to your garden; they are well worth taking the time to feed. Hazards of Putting Food Straight on the Ground Magpies can be your friend though as they will eat harmful insects and rodents. Are there endangered small birds I should feed? Given the huge range of ground-feeding birds that might visit our gardens, the range of ground feeders on offer is surprisingly small. In contrast to the thrushes, doves and pigeons are granivorous birds, eating mainly grains and hard-husked seeds. So although both groups of bird feed on the ground, what they eat is quite different. How do I stop big birds eating all my bird food?

The sheer size of the bird and the crop are why it can seem like pigeons don’t leave your bird food alone until they have finished the lot. Firstly its nice wood . there is a wooden bar which divides the tray into 4 eaqual sections. The wooden bars can be removed as well as the acetate tray for cleaning. Available with plastic or metal fittings, they come in a wide variety of sizes and styles and are suitable for sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts or any free-flowing feeder seed mix. TIP: Metal fittings usually last longer than plastic and they are more resistant to squirrel damage. Look for RSPB Ultimate feeders. However, the most important factor to consider is bird safety. Is the feeder safe for birds to use? With no points where birds’ feet could get trapped? What bird food do you need for your bird feeder? And, if you have squirrels or cats in your garden, what is the best feeder to keep your bird food and birds safe? All RSPB bird feeders are designed with bird safety in mind. Read on to learn more about the different options available. Seed feeders Personally, I’m not that keen on ground feeding cages. They certainly keep larger birds out, but the bars are so tightly spaced that even some of the smaller customers think twice before venturing in.

Try pairing a sturdy feeder (see RSPB Ultimate easy-clean feeders above) with a guardian. The gaps in the guardian aren’t big enough for magpies to reach through to the food in the feeder, and the sturdiness of the feeder will resist any potential damage from the end of magpies’ beaks. I love to watch the birds taking their time eating ,looking around and knowing that they are safe from prediators and larger birds.

Placing squirrel cones above and/or below your feeders can help stop the squirrels reaching them. Alternatively you can enclose the post of your bird table or feeder pole in smooth plastic pipe and so make it more difficult for squirrels to climb. Cats
