When calibrating, it is important to have consistent ambient light. I don't like working in the dark, but I've created a calibration for that scenario, as well. The next step is to measure the ambient light in the workspace. When a computer monitor leaves the factory, it comes with default settings. It’s unlikely that these will accurately display the colour and tone in a way that helps the photographer with photo editing. Often the screen is too bright, contrast too high and colours too saturated. The default settings make the image look attractive but aren’t concerned with accuracy. It’s therefore essential to spend a little time setting up and calibrating any new monitor. The SpyderX Pro sits together with the X-Rite i1Display Studio on the sweet spot for the monitor calibration tool market: around USD 150. The alternatives below that range are simply not worth it and have to make too many compromises in terms of accuracy and longevity to achieve a lower price. Some calibrators can measure surrounding ambient light and adjust monitor brightness to compensate. Useful when comparing printed images with on-screen equivalents.

Most cheap displays use TN displays that are often 6-bit internally, which leads to severe color banding, especially when calibrated to anything outside their native white point. To make matters worse, TN displays are usually very blue, meaning they have a hardware white point over 7500K. Ambient Light – the lighting conditions where you carry out your photo editing can have a large impact on how you perceive images. Ambient light detection can detect this and recommend settings for your lighting conditions. I use a Spyder 4 Express to calibrate my monitor. Here’s how the process works. If you have a different device, the process will be similar. 1. Run the Spyder4Express software that comes with the device The most valuable is arguably the ability to calibrate your monitor not just to conform to a typical 2.2 gamma and 6500 K white point, but also to color space standards like sRGB, Adobe RGB, NTSC and Rec 709.
