About this deal

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (1998) was released for the PlayStation, titled Ridge Racer Type 4 in Europe. It marks the debut of racing teams, which became a core aspect for all games to follow, and is the first in the series to use Gouraud shading for its graphics. Multiplayer modes are also present, being displayed in a split-screen orientation. In 2018, it was released as one of the built-in games on the PlayStation Classic mini console. [5] We’re combining both Ridge Racers games on the PSP into one entry here because they really are quite similar. These days, the sequel’s existence basically invalidates the first — it’s Ridge Racers with more content — but it’s the earlier game you would’ve played on PSP launch day.

In an interview with the Namco development team, Nobuhisa Mikoda ( Rage Racer game designer and project director) admitted that the game was "somewhat off series and aimed to pursue enjoyment in shift controlling". [ citation needed] Rage Racer's introduction introduced "mascot girl" Reiko Nagase. [2] Composed by Tetsukazu Nakanishi and Hiroshi Okubo, it marked the beginning of Namco's new primary sound team after their former members began working with other companies doing production on games such as Street Fighter EX (1996) and Driving Emotion Type-S (2000). The former had previously worked on Ridge Racer Revolution. [ citation needed] a b c Kujawa, Kraig; Hager, Dean (May 1997). "Team EGM Sports: Rage Racer". Electronic Gaming Monthly. No.94. Ziff Davis. p.116. All of the 'standard' cars can be upgraded, with the cost increasing greatly from one grade to the next. The highest level to which the cars can be upgraded is Grade 5. This means the Assoluto Ghepardo cannot be upgraded, as it is a Grade 5 car as standard. And to complement the sheer number of different courses to race on, there are 62 different cars to acquire, including, in true Ridge Racer tradition, some delightfully silly ones, such as a miniature aircraft piloted by Pac-Man. Strangely, a few of the special cars found in the first Ridge Racer for PSP are omitted from Ridge Racer 2, while others have been adjusted somewhat. These few missing or changed cars are, today, literally the only reason you might want to explore Ridge Racer PSP as opposed to its superior successor.internal X & Internal Y= Very High, Stretching mode: Stretch to full window size, render Mode: 2 (Use framebuffer object) text filt = 2 FPS limit= 63, Compatibility=2,3,2; Shader effects= 5 (GLSlang Files (gpuPeteOGL2-slv/slf))

Throughout the games, Reiko almost never speaks (unless the announcer from Rage Racer is implied to be her). This changed by Ridge Racer Draw & Drift where she was given a voice. On PS5, the game looks, sounds and plays great, with the 3D visuals looking surprisingly lovely upscaled to modern displays. While some objects are still recognisably rather “low-poly” in nature, the increase in colour depth over the original PSP — no more dithering — and the often spectacular lighting effects used on the courses mean that Ridge Racer 2 actually stands up really rather well as a fairly “modern” looking game in some respects.Ham, Tom (May 30, 1997). Her special abilities include swimming and playing the guitar, while her hobbies are driving cars on her spare time, making souffles and water sports. Anyway, although not the most technologically advanced entry in the Ridge Racer series by virtue of the fact it was designed for the relatively humble hardware of the PSP (which, power and capability-wise, occupies a spot somewhere between the PS1 and PS2), Ridge Racer 2 is an absolutely phenomenal arcade racer, and regarded by many fans of the series as the best game overall. Sure, Ridge Racer Type 4 has its fans — and I certainly love me some Ridge Racer Type 4 — but it’s hard to argue with the sheer amount of game there is in Ridge Racer 2. In Ridge Racers 2 and Ridge Racer 3D, an error exists between Mythical Coast and Union Hill District where there exists a piece of road that does not match up between the two courses, despite this portion of the map supposedly being shared by both courses.

Ridge Racer is a series of arcade racing games developed and published by Namco for both the arcade and various consoles. The 2011 Vita title was negatively received for various reasons, whilst the latest console game, Ridge Racer Unbounded, was marked with a departure from the drifting style and mechanics of what the series is known for, experimenting with a more destructive style similar to the Burnout series, although Ridge Racer 3D, a launch title for the 3DS, was better received compared to Vita and Unbounded. The game was never as popular as its previous main titles and never had a Japanese release either.

The main problem with Rage Racer is the same one that plagued both of the previous titles: poor collisions. Instead of realistic crashes, cars simply bounce off each other. Ramming a car from behind simply shoots it further into the lead, leaving the player's car sliding out of control. Brushing up against a wall produces a similar effect. Car racing games have been a staple gaming favorite for decades. Over that time, developers have experimented with the genre and innovated to please a discerning modern audience. Solo in Ridge Racer Type 4) – A French brand specializing in compacts and sports cars with excellent grip. You can pretty much sum up Ridge Racer as a franchise into two eras: the games that came before the launch of the PSP, on the PS1 and PS2, and everything that came after. The games of the before times each tended to be wildly different, with unique progression structures and gameplay. But after Ridge Racers on the PSP, Namco more or less repeatedly iterated upon the same formula until the end. The declining relevance of arcade racers throughout the aughts probably had something to do with that. R: Racing Evolution (2003) was released for the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, serving as a spin-off of the franchise. The European release was titled R: Racing and published by Nintendo. It includes over 33 licensed vehicles from real-world car manufacturers, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Super GT. The game also has a story mode. Some releases of the GameCube version include Pac-Man Vs. as a free bonus.

Assoluto Squaldon (Assoulto Dragone in Japanese version) (Grade ?) - 6,666,666 e.g. (Only provided with manual transmission) Much of what’s true about Ridge Racer 6 applies to the most recent entry on our list, 2011’s Ridge Racer on the PlayStation Vita. The game gets a bit of a boost because it was on Sony’s final handheld that was simply too perfect for this world, and introduced fresh designs for some of the series’ classic nameplates like the Gnade Esperanza and Assoluto Promessa and Fatalita, that paid tribute to their original incarnations in Rage Racer and R4. The concept of placing players in factions then pitting them against each other in team-based events was a novel way to promote online multiplayer at the time, too.

The PSP titles saw the return of Reiko Nagase after her absence in Ridge Racer V, now with reworked CGI and new outfit. In the first PSP title, she's not only featured in the game's intro, but also the ending credits.
