About this deal

The days when a high mileage car could make it's battery last 10 years, despite the doom-sayers, seems to have gone now. I was a very early fan of the smart chargers, using a Gunson transformer-type, as the full-time power supply for the 12v battery in our original Ace which had no 240V mains as standard, from '82-01 a period of 17 years allowing a car battery to function as a leisure battery and still get 10+ years life from the two batteries used. Look at a typical smart charger charging curve to see what happens - look here for more info http://batteryuniversity.

Despite 12A on the box, the instructions and gauge have max output at 8A – and we saw 4A as it took 16 hours to hit 80 per cent. My Lidl charger is a couple of years old (grey top, blue base) and it only has motorbike, car and winter modes. We monitored how low each would charge from, too, and looked at leads and clamps, plus the battery types each can deal with.

If the vehicle you want to charge is kept outside, a mains-powered trickle charger may not be all that feasible. The better your problem and question is described, the easier it is for other Ultimate Speed owners to provide you with a good answer. Doesn't look as nice as the C-Tek (and I suspect it is based on a discontinued model), but the cost savings have to be made somewhere. It claims to be 'intelligent microprocessor controlled' and has a 'diagnostics programme and controlled charging process'. While it's not designed to recharge a discharged battery, it will keep a healthy battery fully juiced. The last 20% takes a lot longer, possibly another 8-10 hours mainly because the charging current tails off as the charger is voltage limited and frequently switches down to around 13.

Looking like an overgrown CTEK MXS, it has long leads and a reconditioning mode, plus can provide a 13. The optimum charging cauurent for a battery is around 10% of it's capacity which should therefore get it up to around 80% charge in about 8-10 hours from flat. The smart charger is not so smart in dealing with a battery whose voltage has fallen below about 8 volts. However, it has short DC leads, maybe due to the rear spool storage, low IP33 protection rating and no option for a permanent connection or extension cable. Taken from Sealey’s latest range, it was among the quickest to 80 per cent at just under nine hours, although it was some way off its 12A rating. Getting you on your way after your car has suffered a flat battery remains at the heart of the test, so we timed how long each unit took to reach an 80 per cent charge – at which point a vehicle should be able to start – on our identical 80Ah test batteries.
